A running watch has always been an interesting accessory that deserves everybody’s attention, especially about how technologically-advanced it can be. It is commonly equipped with some data processing features to store your personal running records, measure distance, monitor your heart rate, and more.

Garmin recently announced the Forerunner 220, a new addition in the company’s wide range of running watches. At a glance, the wristwatch has a color display, some buttons, and hinged wristband. Inside this small running watch, there are some respectable features worth mentioning.

Main Features

While it can function as a regular watch that tells you time and date, it also comes with many training features . In general, Forerunner 220 can track distance, pace, heart rate, personal running record, and of course, it has a functioning GPS technology. This watch basically tracks all important data analyzed from your running activity and stores it for future references.

It can also compare the already stored data from your previous run with the data from the currently going running activity. If you hit you personal records such as longest run or fastest mile, the watch will automatically provide both audible and vibration alerts; you can also set up the watch to notice you with one type of alert only. Furthermore, it can store history of up to 1000 laps.

Vibration alerts are as well available for lap, mile split, or other information. It is possible to set up the desired pace before you start running; the watch will then prompt you anytime you are behind or ahead the already configured pace.

Forerunner 220 can wirelessly track your heart rate, but you need to use a compatible heart-rate monitor around your chest during running activity. The compatible heart rate monitor is available separately or as additional accessory bundled with a purchase of Forerunner 220.

Apart from the aforementioned features, Forerunner 220 also brings an auto pause option and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology. The auto-pause feature will automatically pause the running watch as you pause running; it will start operating again instantly as you continue your running.

In terms of connectivity, this wristwatch is equipped with Bluetooth technology, allowing you to link to Garmin Connect Mobile on a smartphone. Even better, you can upload your personal records on computer to Connect through USB connection. Free training plan is available from the website or you can design it for yourself before you download it to Forerunner 220.

For those who like to train at indoor environment where GPS function cannot function well, Forerunner 220’s accelerometer will track distance and pace without requiring any additional sensor.

Additional Information

As previously mentioned, Forerunner 220 has a color display, some buttons, and hinged wristband. The overall dimension of the watch measures at 1.8-inch W x 1.8-inch H x 0.5-inch D; it weighs 1.4 oz. The screen is 1-inch (diameter) displaying 180 x 180 pixels resolution. The screen can be considered high resolution color display (for its size), making it easier for you to read the provided information and numbers.

It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that keeps the watch operating for up to 10 hours in running mode and 6 weeks in watch mode. Additionally, Forerunner 220 is water resistant down to 50 meters deep. Accessories included in the box are charging/data cradle and manuals. The bundle variant includes all those accessories and a premium heart rate monitor.
