The Falcon Zero F170 Dashcam Full-HD 1080p was released in early 2015, and it has nearly all features expected from a modern dashcam.

Unlike most gadgets found in car, a dashcam is not something for entertainment purpose. It does not make your journey safer or more convenient. It has only one thing to do; it records everything that happens in or around your car and the footage can be used as evidence in case something horrible happens on the road including accidents.

Introduction

And unlike usual camcorder, a dashcam is used mainly in a car by mounting it on windshield. There have been quite a lot of big names in dashcam market, and new products keep on coming.

Falcon Zero F170 is packaged in a small box that measures at 8.2-inch L x 5.6-inch W x 2.6-inch H, and weighs only 0.9 lbs. The box also includes USB cord, dual USB car charger, power cord, vehicle mounting system, GPS software CD, a 32GB Class 10 SD card, and an instruction manual. You can also download DashCamViewer application from the company’s official website for either Mac or Windows.

The mounting hardware has a swiveling ball joint, allowing you to adjust the camera for better angle while driving; the swiveling ball makes it possible to record everything that happens sideways and behind your car as well.

Camera lens covers 170 degree viewing angle, so it is wide enough to display everything you see from the windshield. Videos are recorded in a maximum Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, but lower resolution options are available including 1280 x 720, 848 x 480, and 640 x 480.

The lens has a respectable maximum aperture of f/2.0 with night vision. Exposure settings are adjustable for both videos recording and photographs.

There is a 2.7-inch screen on the front to display real-time recording and on-device playback. Videos are recorded in endless loop of 3 minutes or 5 minutes. When the storage is full, the dashcam automatically overwrites the first saved video.

There is also an option to record in HDR mode to get the best exposure compensation. Additional settings such as sharpness, white balance, and ISO are also adjustable, just like in digital camera. There are three image quality options including Fine, Normal, and Economy; picture resolutions start from VGA quality at its lowest and gradually increase to 1.3MP, 2MP, 3MP, 5MP, 8MP, 10MP, and 12MP at its best.

Additional features include GPS, G-Sensor, Parking Security, and Motion Sensor. GPS tracking gives clear location information of your vehicle and speed in the recorded video. It uses Google Map to pinpoint your location.

The G-sensor will automatically save the current clip anytime the dashcam detects any sudden braking, vibration, and sudden movement that it assumes as result of collision. When it does not seem to detect collision correctly, you can adjust its sensitivity to High, Medium, or Low, and completely turn it off.

Motion Sensor and Parking Security are used when the vehicle is not moving. Motion Sensor will detect any movement around the vehicle from about 10 feet away and record the movement until it stops.

As a complement, Parking Security stays active even when the vehicle is off. Using the built-in battery, it automatically turns on and records footage for about 10 seconds anytime it detects vibration when the vehicle is parked. Falcon Zero F170 also has HDMI out to view your footage on bigger screen.
