Approach G8 measures at 2.1-inch W x 4.4-inch H x 0.6-inch D; it weighs 3.97 oz. It has 3-inch transflective TFT color touchscreen with 240 x 400 pixels resolution. It is powered by a rechargeable lithium polymer battery which can last for approximately 15 hours on a single charge.

Approach G8 is a waterproof device with IPX7 standard. Some of the key features equipped in Garmin Approach G8 are briefly outlined as follows.

PlaysLike Distance

This device can be considered slim to today’s standards, yet it has some substantial features for golfers including the PlaysLike Distance, Club Advice, and Touch Targeting.

The PlaysLike basically measures distance from your current position to the target, giving you the chance to precisely adjust the power of your every shot. The good thing is that the measurement is adjusted for either downhill or uphill shot.

In addition to this feature, G8 brings “Club Advice” that remembers how far you hit with each club, so it can recommend which club to use based on the distance.

Another important golfing feature is the Touch Targeting function which allows you to freely touch any point on the display; G8 will then use it as the target and measure the distance.

Connectivity Features

Compared to G7, Approach G8 is more superior in terms of connectivity feature as it has Wi-Fi to automatically update courses free of charge. Wi-Fi connectivity also allows you to access Garmin Connect where you can join golf community to share or compare your records and track your improvements.

Interestingly, Garmin Approach G8 is as well equipped with Smart Notification that can receive alerts, email, or text once it is connected to your smartphones. It receives wireless signals from the phone and provides notifications to let you know that you have messages on your phone.

Even better, the messages are forwarded to G8 so you can read it anytime you want to without even using your phone. Currently, Smart Notification feature is compatible only with iPhone 4S or later.

Digital Scorecard Function

The G8 also functions as digital scorecard with some scoring options including Match Play, Skins, Stroke Play, and Stableford. This digital scorecard can keep track of scores for up to 4 players. You can view the total score on the screen and access the printable version via computer.

PinPointer and Manual Pin Positioning

PinPointer works like a compass that shows the direction to the pin or flag in case you cannot see it from certain position in the course, regardless of the device’s screen orientation.

Adding the functionality of Touch Targeting, you can even manually move the pin position on the display to wherever point you want. It is also possible to zoom in the map with Green View.

When laying-up, there are 4 layup arcs available on the map including 100, 150, 200, and 250 yards to give better preferences on how far you should hit before reaching the target.

Big Numbers Mode is available to enlarge and mainly focus on distance information for easier viewing on the screen.
