Garmin GPSMAP 64st relies on its quad helix antenna that extends above the main unit for superior reception. Below the antenna is a 2.6-inch transflective color screen producing 160 x 240 pixels resolution; it is also sunlight-readable.
GPS and GLONASS
Garmin GPSMAP 64st use dual GPS and GLONASS receivers to ensure faster lock-in and better accuracy. GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is a Russian satellite-based navigation system that can work co-operatively with GPS (Global Positioning System).
It means GPSMAP 64st has 24 more satellites to access. Compared to other navigation devices that rely on GPS only, the receiver on GPA/GLONASS-based device can lock on to a position approximately 20% faster.
This feature should be very helpful in case you are in a location where there are plenty of covers or obstructions that possibly block the signal reception.
For those who use iPhone 4s or more advanced versions, you can pair GPSMAP 64st with your devices to use the smart notification feature. When connected, any text, email, or alert received on your iPhone will be forwarded to the GPSMAP 64st.
As long as you are within cell phone range, the Garmin Connect mobile app also allows you to share locations from your phones. It is not currently compatible with phones running Android operating system.
GPSMAP 64st can be powered by either a rechargeable NiMH battery or 2 AA batteries. The NiMH can be recharged while inside the device. It does not use any special or modified version of AA batteries; you can use the traditional ones that you can get from almost any retail store. This rugged navigation device is water-resistant (IPX7), so it is suitable for various activities and situation.
Every GPSMAP 64st comes preloaded with 250,000 geocaches locations and 5,000 waypoints. Interestingly, the geocaches comes from Geocaching.com instead of Garmin’s OpenCaching.com.
The caches come with descriptions and hints to make it easy for you to start from anywhere. Compatibility with BaseCamp Mobile allows you to use phone data connectivity to get new maps and download new geocaches if necessary. This device comes with 8GB of internal storage, yet it is expandable with a microSD memory card for more storage space.
A free 1-year subscription to BirdsEye Imagery is also included. When coupled with the BaseCamp function, you can download and transfer high resolution satellite images and integrate the images to the maps.
