Originally a manufacturer of car GPS, Garmin has been continuously expanding its name in the market with other product categories including dash cams.

Following the steps of VIRB action camera, Garmin Dash Cam 20 and Dash Cam 35 do more than just recording footage of your journeys, but they also incorporate GPS data including location on a map and speed into the videos. Similar to Garmin’s satellite navigation devices, the dash cams come with vehicle power connector, so they automatically turn on and start recording as you turn the ignition.

Garmin Dash Cam 20

When compared to most modern cameras’ screens, Dash Cam 20 is tiny with its 2.3-inch screen. It is a small device with an assortment of buttons below the screens at the front. There is a power button and a microSD slot . Four buttons are located at the front; they provide access to manual saving, setting, playback, and snapshot. A 4GB microSD is supplied in the box, but the slot accepts up to 32GB microSD of class 10.

By default, videos are recorded at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second, but you also get the options to create footage of 720p or WVGA quality. At its highest setting the supplied memory card can store about an hour of footage in AVI format.

The good thing about Dash Cam is that the video is not recorded as one big file. It will record multiple videos; each of which is 255MB. When the memory capacity is full, Dash Cam 20 will keep on recording new videos and overwrite the oldest one in the sequence.

When an incident occurs, however, it is easy to stop the recording and mark the recorded file as “protected”, so any new file will not overwrite it. Another good thing is that the camera has G-sensor or Incident Detection feature.

The sensor picks up rough vibration, sudden braking, sudden turning, or any unexpected changes and considers them incident. Equipped with GPS capability, footage is stamped with information including time, location, speed, and direction. Longitude and latitude data are also kept.

Dash Cam 20 supports on-device playback, but you can import the file and play it on any software that supports the file format. Garmin also provides its own software to play the footage recorded by Dash Cam 20, and lets you examine the details.

Location information or your position on a map can be viewed on Google Map. For more detailed analysis, you can use the Advanced Mode to see Incident Detection data which provides G-sensor reading from all sides of your vehicle including front, back, left, right, up, and down.

Garmin Dash Cam 35

This is one of the latest Dash Cams by Garmin, featuring 3.0-inch LCD screen, more storage capacity, and Driver Awareness feature. Compared to the Dash Cam 20, this has several better specifications although most features are exactly the same.

GPS data and maximum video resolution are the same, but the microSD card slot accepts up to 64GB memory. One thing that really separates the two is that Dash Cam 35 has Driver Awareness feature which provides alerts when approaching speed cameras, red light, or anytime you’re driving too close to the vehicle ahead. All other features are similar.

Introduction

Everyone is trying to convince us that the days of unruly roads have long gone, but accident happens. From a small accident of fender-bender to major road incidents, everything can get very fuzzy in an instant.

Argument with another driver is often inevitable and insurance claims are on the way. If there is something that can help to settle the dispute and see who is at fault and liable, it is a dash cam. The choices for dash cams are abundant in the market, two of which are the Dash Cam 10 and 20 by Garmin.

Garmin Dash Cam 10

The first noticeable thing from Dash Cam 10 is its small size, measuring at 6.6cm W x 8.21cm H x 3.69cm D and weighing at 115g. It fits in anybody’s hand, meaning it will not clutter your view of the road.

This Garmin Dash Cam 10 works from the windshield to record footage of your trip. It has 2.3-inch color display for playback, and footage is stamped with time and date. Garmin provides free Dash Cam player software for PC and Mac, allowing you to get more detailed playback and information of the footage.

The package includes vehicle suction cup mount and vehicle power cable. When the power cable is plugged, the camera will start recording the moment you turn on the car and it stops recording when the car is turned off.

Video footage is recorded in continuous loop mode; there will be multiple small files instead of one big video file. When it runs out of storage space, the oldest footage in the memory will be overwritten. A 4GB microSD card and adapter are included in the box as well, and it supports microSD up to 32GB capacity. Class 10 microSD is required.

Dash Cam 10 has a wide-angle lens to cover full view of the road. You can adjust exposure settings manually depending on the lighting conditions to get clearer footage. Supported resolutions include 1080p, 720p, and WVGA.

There is a built-in G-sensor which detects any sudden movement of the car for examples hard braking, cornering, or anything possibly caused by a collision. The camera will then save the current footage and prevent it from being overwritten.

Because Dash Cam 10 also has microphone it records both audio and video. This microphone can be turned off, preventing everything you say in the car from being recorded. The included suction cup allows you to remove the camera easily.

Should you need to take a picture of car damage or anything else for filing claims, the dash cam has photo capability too. When not connected to vehicle power cable, the battery can last for about 1 hour.

Garmin Dash Cam 20

At a glance, there is nothing different between Garmin Dash Cam 10 and 20. They are similarly designed and they have the same measurement and screen size. Both also have G-sensor and record at the same resolutions too.

However Garmin Dash Cam 20 is more fully featured thanks to GPS integration to make motes of longitude, latitude, time, date speed, and direction of your car in the footage.
