Originally a manufacturer of car GPS, Garmin has been continuously expanding its name in the market with other product categories including dash cams.

Following the steps of VIRB action camera, Garmin Dash Cam 20 and Dash Cam 35 do more than just recording footage of your journeys, but they also incorporate GPS data including location on a map and speed into the videos. Similar to Garmin’s satellite navigation devices, the dash cams come with vehicle power connector, so they automatically turn on and start recording as you turn the ignition.

Garmin Dash Cam 20

When compared to most modern cameras’ screens, Dash Cam 20 is tiny with its 2.3-inch screen. It is a small device with an assortment of buttons below the screens at the front. There is a power button and a microSD slot . Four buttons are located at the front; they provide access to manual saving, setting, playback, and snapshot. A 4GB microSD is supplied in the box, but the slot accepts up to 32GB microSD of class 10.

By default, videos are recorded at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 frames per second, but you also get the options to create footage of 720p or WVGA quality. At its highest setting the supplied memory card can store about an hour of footage in AVI format.

The good thing about Dash Cam is that the video is not recorded as one big file. It will record multiple videos; each of which is 255MB. When the memory capacity is full, Dash Cam 20 will keep on recording new videos and overwrite the oldest one in the sequence.

When an incident occurs, however, it is easy to stop the recording and mark the recorded file as “protected”, so any new file will not overwrite it. Another good thing is that the camera has G-sensor or Incident Detection feature.

The sensor picks up rough vibration, sudden braking, sudden turning, or any unexpected changes and considers them incident. Equipped with GPS capability, footage is stamped with information including time, location, speed, and direction. Longitude and latitude data are also kept.

Dash Cam 20 supports on-device playback, but you can import the file and play it on any software that supports the file format. Garmin also provides its own software to play the footage recorded by Dash Cam 20, and lets you examine the details.

Location information or your position on a map can be viewed on Google Map. For more detailed analysis, you can use the Advanced Mode to see Incident Detection data which provides G-sensor reading from all sides of your vehicle including front, back, left, right, up, and down.

Garmin Dash Cam 35

This is one of the latest Dash Cams by Garmin, featuring 3.0-inch LCD screen, more storage capacity, and Driver Awareness feature. Compared to the Dash Cam 20, this has several better specifications although most features are exactly the same.

GPS data and maximum video resolution are the same, but the microSD card slot accepts up to 64GB memory. One thing that really separates the two is that Dash Cam 35 has Driver Awareness feature which provides alerts when approaching speed cameras, red light, or anytime you’re driving too close to the vehicle ahead. All other features are similar.

Introduction

With a camcorder attached to your windshield, you have footage of any event that occurs during your drive which can be used as an evidence for any insurance claim or other purposes.

In a place where the law enforcement is potentially unscrupulous, such device offers exceptional value. A typical camcorder can do the job, but that is not an ideal device.

You need a purpose-built recorder called Dashboard Camera. Garmin, popularly known for its range of GPS devices for cars and sport enthusiasts, has recently announced the release of two new dashboard cameras: the Dash Cam 30 and 35. Both have the capabilities of recording high-definition footage with plenty of automation features.

Garmin Dash Cam 30

The biggest difference between a typical camcorder and dashboard camera is the way they handle footage. Dashboard camera records and stores footage in a continuous loop, so there is no need to manually delete old footage every time a new one is created.

Garmin Dash Cam 30 features a wide-angle lens that produces a maximum video resolution of 1080p. You can also use its two lower resolutions including 720p or WVGA. It has a 1.4-inch LCD display and comes with a 4GB capacity MicroSD card. The memory card slot accepts any Class 4 microSD with a maximum capacity of 64GB.

When connected to your vehicle power source, Garmin Dash Cam 30 can automatically start recording as you turn on the vehicle and pause recording when you stop. It is packaged with adhesive mount and vehicle power cable as well.

One of the most interesting features is Incident Detection or G-sensor. In case an incident occurs, such as road accident, collision, or any unfortunate event, the camera automatically detects it and stores the current video to the memory card. It preserves the saved footage, so the next recording will not overwrite it.

There is also a snapshot feature, allowing you to easily remove Dash Cam 30 from the windshield and capture photograph of vehicle damage or any relevant pictures.

You can view saved videos and images directly on its screen or use the company’s Dash Cam Player software compatible with PC and Mac with which you can view and organize footage on computer. This software if provided free of charge by Garmin.

Garmin Dash Cam 35

The more sophisticated Dash Cam 35 features three additional advantages including bigger screen, GPS functionality, and driver awareness. The LCD screen is 3.0-inch for better viewing experience.

More than that, Garmin Dash Cam 35 is GPS-enabled, so footage is automatically stamped with complete information of time, date, speed, longitude, and latitude.

Another big difference is driver alerts system. It consists of two different features including Forward Collision and Speed Cameras Warning. The former produces alerts to notify drivers if they are driving too close to the vehicle ahead, while the latter gives alerts for upcoming red lights and speed cameras.

In terms of memory capacity, maximum video resolution, and snapshot functionality, both Dash Cams 30 and 35 are similar to each other. Each is even packaged with the same 4GB capacity microSD and supports the same maximum capacity. You can also use the same software to organize and view footage on PC or Mac.
