It seems that Garmin has almost all consumer categories covered in the company’s market of wearable devices. It does not really matter if you are a professional or casual swimmer, cyclist, golfer, runner, backpacker, hiker, or any adrenaline-rushing adventurer; there is always a GPS watch for you.
Garmin even has a series of GPS watch designed specifically for pilot. Recently the company announced the D2 Bravo, a successor of the previously popular D2 Pilot.
The original D2 is filled with almost all aviation-navigation features that can be packed in a watch, yet D2 Bravo comes with many more functions over its predecessor .
The D2 Bravo is a premium GPS-enabled watch that brings sapphire lens, reinforced housing made from stainless steel and glass fiber, premium leather band, and classic round face.
While the external parts are quite common in high-end wristwatch category, the software that runs underneath is quite a rarity. It also has an omni-directional stainless steel antenna to provide fast GPS satellite acquisition, and it actually helps to maintain slim form factor.
This watch works with both GPS and GLONASS. The overall dimension of the watch measures at 2.0-inch H x 2.0-inch W x 0.6-inch D, and it weighs 2.98 oz.
The screen is high resolution transflective, producing 218 x 218 pixels resolution. There is also an LED backlighting to improve visibility during night flight.
Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion, the watch will run for 20 hours in GPS mode or 6 weeks in watch mode before another recharge is required.
Garmin’s signature features including Nearest Function and Direct-to are provided. The former basically tells a pilot about the nearest airport for a quick landing if necessary; the latter can be used for routing navigation either to a waypoint or any destination.
A worldwide airport database comes preloaded and the watch provides support for up to 18 different languages. More than that, D2 Bravo has altimeter, adjustable barometer setting, and 3-axis compass with HSI.
Barometer setting based on oxygen level is provided; there will be an alert when the plane reaches an altitude where supplemental oxygen will be required.
Custom and preset altitude alerts are available to let you know in case your plane has descended to low or gone off the proper course. Essential information during flight can be set to trigger vibrating alarm too, for examples fuel tank switch and other time-sensitive information during flight.
Other data such as speed, time enroute, and altitude are stored in the watch during every flight for future reference. Zulu/UTC time is displayed simultaneously on the screen as well.
Assigning customizable data filed is possible. The screen can provide reading of GPS ground-speed, glide ratio, bearing, distance from airports/waypoints, and more. Waypoints can be manually added in case you need to add any location that is not available from the map database.
In addition, D2 Bravo can work as activity tracker and multisport watch. Activity tracking features include step counter, move bar, sleep monitoring, and automatic goal.
More than that, you can use the watch to measure swimming metrics such as pool lengths, swimming distance, pace, calories, and stroke type recognition.
Swimming metrics measurement even works in open water. Many running and cycling features are present too for examples Virtual Partner, VO2 Max, custom-target workout, interval training, and compatibility with heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.
Garmin D2 Bravo can be paired with smartphone to access Garmin Pilot with which you can receive meteorological information including weather, visibility, barometric pressure, wind, precipitation, and more. You can even wirelessly control a VIRB action camera or multiple VIRB Elite cameras mounted on the plane from the watch.
