Adaptive Touchscreen Provides Guidance Everywhere
The display on the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t is designed specifically so that users can read its screen even in bright sunlight, which is helpful for hiking, ATV riding other outdoor activities. The display size in the compact device is 1.43 inches x 2.15 inches, and the display itself is 65K color TFT for optimum viewing.
Unlike smartphones or other, more fragile GPS enabled devices, the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t is built to be rugged. It withstands elements such as water, dust, humidity and dirt. In fact, it has an IPX7 water rating, which means it can stand up to exposure to water up to one meter deep for as long as 30 minutes.
So, users can use the eTrex Touch 35t in precipitation such as rain or snow, as well as during exposure to splashes of water or incidental immersion for less than half an hour.
Maps and Connectivity Keep Users Moving and in Touch
The eTrex Touch 35t comes preloaded TOPO US 100K maps, with 8 GBs of room in its internal memory for more maps, as well as 250,000 preloaded geocaches courtesy of geocaching.com.
These geocaches offer users an efficient, paperless way to keep track of important trip information such as changes in terrain, trek difficulty, hints, trail descriptions and more. So, users no longer need to rely on paper printouts to find their way.
These maps combine with wireless connectivity to provide access to ANT+, smart notifications and VIRB links. So, the eTrex Touch 35t connects with compatible devices from Garmin to share trip information wirelessly, and it works with Bluetooth enabled smartphones to make sure users receive texts, emails and other notifications while they are away. (Users can, of course, disable this connection.) Users who also have a VIRB action camera can use the eTrex Touch 35t as a remote control for taking photos as well.
The device also is compatible with TOPO 24K maps, BlueChart g2 preloaded cards – available thanks to the eTrex Touch 35t’s microSD card slot – for water navigation and City Navigator NT maps for turn by turn directions on the road. For an added subscription cost, users can make use of BirdsEye Satellite Imagery as well to download satellite images and integrate them with maps on the device.
Plus, the eTrex Touch 35t works off both GPS and GLONASS satellites to pinpoint a user’s position quickly and accurately. Thanks to the eTrex Touch 35t’s ability to access both types of satellites at the same time, users can take advantage of extra 24 satellites than if it used GPS alone. These extra satellites allow users access to wider travels without losing satellite connection and functionality.
Electronic Compass Works No Matter How You Hold the Device
The Garmin eTrex Touch 35t’s built in, three-axis electric compass includes technology that negates the effect of a user tilting the device. So, the user does not have to hold the eTrex Touch 35t level to find out her heading, even when standing in place.
The eTrex Touch 35t has a barometric altimeter as well. This allows the eTrex Touch 35t to follow changes in barometric pressure, which it then uses to identify the user’s exact altitude. The user can use this data to watch for changes in barometric pressure over a length of time, which gives the user a heads up regarding changing weather.
Take the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t Anywhere
Garmin and other manufacturers offer a wide variety of mounts to take the eTrex Touch 35t from a handheld device to a mounted one. The eTrex Touch 35t also works with dozens of lanyards, straps, clips, holsters, cases and covers to make carrying the device easy for users while offering protection for the already rugged handheld.
Because of this flexibility, hikers can tether the eTrex Touch 35t to their backpacks or wear it on their belts, while users who choose faster modes of transportation can stabilize the device on their car, bike, ATV or other vehicle.
So, users can use the eTrex Touch 35t for such activities as
- ATV expeditions
- Hiking treks
- Bicycle rides
- Boating excursions
- Road trips
- Everyday commuting
With tide tables, including optional Bluechart tables, as well as sun and moon data and area calculations, there is no limit to where users can take the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t. Fitness enthusiasts can even connect compatible heart rate monitors, bike speed sensors and bike cadence sensors to track their progress on the bike trail or while exercising.
Planning Tools Let Users Prepare Ahead of Time
As part of purchasing the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t, users gain access to a trip planning software called BaseCamp. This software allows users to check out and organize maps, routes, waypoints and more. The complimentary software lets users develop “Garmin Adventures,” interactive journals that share trip details and progress with friends, fellow travelers and family.
Users can see two-dimensional and three-dimensional topographical data on their computers, including elevation profiles and contours. On top of that, users who have a subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery can send in infinite number of satellite images to their device to work with BaseCamp.
Battery Life, Device Weight and Other Specifications
The Garmin eTrex Touch 35t operates on two AA batteries, which are not included with purchase. Garmin recommends using NiMH or lithium batteries and touts up to 16 hours of battery life for the device.
With the batteries installed, the Garmin eTrex Touch 35t weighs in at 5.6 ounces. For comparison, that’s lighter than an iPhone 6 Plus at 6.07 ounces but heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge at 4.65 ounces.
The display resolution for the compact, color screen is 160 x 240 pixels. As such, the resolution is mid range for Garmin handheld products.
