Introduction

Garmin Montana 600 series has recently been updated with the addition of four new devices; two of them are Montana 680 and 680t. There isn’t any big difference that sets them apart in terms of both software and hardware. They have GLONASS support, preloaded base maps, and compatibility with external microSD card to expand memory capacity.

One of the distinguishing features of Montana 600 series is the ruggedized design and an array of compatible mounting units to make it more versatile. Free 1-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery comes preloaded as well.

Garmin Montana 680

This ruggedized outdoor digital camera features a 4-inch color touchscreen display that produces 272 x 480 pixels resolution. The screen is glove-friendly and sunlight readable, while the entire body is IPX7 rated as expected from outdoor handheld camera.

The Montana 680 has built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated compass, barometric altimeter, and quick access to satellite-based position-locking powered by both GPS and GLONASS.

It uses either a rechargeable lithium-ion battery or 3 standard AA batteries. With the included rechargeable battery, you can expect the camera to stay on for about 16 hours, or 22 hours with the optional AA batteries.

The camera is 8MP with autofocus and automatic geo-tagging. Every picture contains information about location coordinates, so you can use it as a reference for your next adventure.

By using free BaseCamp software by Garmin, you can organize your photos, keep track of your trip, and plan your next outdoor activities with waypoints, routes, and tracks. This also means you can pinpoint the place where the picture was taken on a map thanks to the software.

BaseCamp is able to display topographic map in either 2D or 3D images including elevation and contour lines. Montana 680 comes with a built-in 4GB memory and it accepts external card to expand capacity.

This device functions as a camera, but it is primarily a digital navigation tool designed for outdoor adventures such as hiking, geocaching road trip, exploration, etc. Montana 680 is equipped with GPS and GLONASS, WAAS-enabled receiver, and HotFix.

It can predict your position quickly, accurately, and maintain position-locking even when you are in the middle of the woods. It is compatible with a wide range of mounting units, allowing you to use it in a car, ATV, RV, or even boat.

You can insert a different card loaded with a different map on the Montana 680 and every map will be handled accordingly. For example, you can use a card loaded with City Navigator NT to get turn-by-turn direction for use in a car or BlueChart g2 for use in a boat.

Downloading TOPO U.S. 24K maps is also easy, and 1-year subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery comes as a bundled bonus. Additionally, with Garmin Custom Maps, you can transform paper maps into downloadable files and load them to Montana 680.

Another good thing is the ability to share waypoints, routes, tracks, and geocaches wirelessly to other users. Montana 680 supports GPX files for direct uploading-to-device of geocaches from Geocaching.com.

All important information including descriptions, hints, terrain, location, and difficulty are stored. There is also a track manager function to help you navigate or organize track log including waypoints and routes.

Garmin Montana 680t

Montana 680 and 680t are near twins with only slight differences in terms of bundled map and built-in memory capacity. Both have base maps, but only the Montana 680t that comes with preloaded TOPO U.S. 100K. The latter has bigger built-in memory capacity with 8GB as well. Apart from those differences, they are identical in terms of hardware and software.
