Introduction

Garmin Oregon 600 is a major improvement over previous devices in the Oregon series with the addition of GLONASS and better screen specifications. A step forward, Garmin provides slight betterment in terms of memory capacity as well as preloaded maps in the Oregon 600t.

Both are basically the same outdoor navigational devices to store geocaches, share waypoints, and plan routes for hiking or other outdoor adventures. Geocaches management is their strong points, yet they are also compatible with other types of maps such as City Navigator and BlueChart g2.

Garmin Oregon 600

GPS and GLONASS

Unlike its predecessors, the Oregon 600 has satellite tracking systems using both GPS and GLONASS. It comes with preloaded base map and two configurable buttons to access different settings, menu, and applications.

Equipped with WAAS and GLONASS enabled receiver as well as HotFix satellite prediction, the device ensures quick yet precise location tracking even when you’re in heavily covered terrains.

Display Screen

Screen is one of the biggest upgrades in the Oregon 600. Its 3-inch transflective display is touchscreen and sunlight readable. The glass is mineralized, allowing for better resistance against impact. Even when you are wearing gloves, touchscreen is still sensitive enough to register commands.

The display uses a combination of internal LED backlight with external source of light (such as sunlight) to increase brightness and provide better viewing. Such improvement also helps with battery life because it is no longer necessary to turn up brightness level every time you need to check your map under bright daylight.

It does both portrait and landscape modes, too. Pages of data fields are customizable in 4 different layouts including 2 large, 4 small & 1 large, 8 small, or 6 small fields.

Battery

Battery in Oregon 600 can keep on powering the device for up to 16 hours. Since it is possible to use traditional 2 AA batteries, you can swap them easily without the needs for recharging. Garmin provides an optional NiMH pack rechargeable battery, too; when Oregon 600 is plugged to an external power source, the battery recharges.

Maps Compatibility

It works with topography maps, but compatibility extends beyond outdoor geocaches that the device also works with City Navigator maps for turn-by-turn direction while driving, BlueChart g2 cards for boat adventure, and BirdsEye Satellite Imagery.

3-axis electronic compas and Barometric altimeter

Topography maps including Trailhead series, U.S. 24K, U.S. 100K, and many other regions are supported. Equipped with 3-axis electronic compass, it is easy to see your exact direction even when you’re not moving at all, or when the device is not perfectly level.

Barometric altimeter comes along as well, allowing you keep track of atmospheric pressure to determine altitude and prepare for possible weather changes.

Moreover, Full Track view lets you see elevations all along the route and zoom any point to view the location in details. Future Plot feature shows you everything ahead of your track.

Geocaching.com

An easy way to find caches is from Geocaching.com, but any GGZ file from any website is compatible. Oregon 600 has enough memory capacity to store up to 4 millions of geocaches. All data are readable including descriptions, logs, and hints.

With BaseCamp, free trip-planning computer software, you can create plans for your next adventures and share them with fellow explorers. During your trip, you can also wirelessly send large files such as photos, waypoints, routes, and tracks to other compatible Garmin devices.

BirdsEye Satellite Imagery

BirdsEye Satellite Imagery requires subscription with which you are allowed to transfer unlimited amounts of satellite photos from BaseCamp to your Oregon 600.

Garmin Oregon 600t

Two Major Differences

Built-on the features of Oregon 600, you can expect many similarities in the Oregon 600t. There are only two major differences: built-in map and memory capacity. Both come with preloaded base map, but the 600t also has topographic data of U.S. territory including Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Hawaii.

The map provides information about ideal trip locations for examples forests, national parks, state parks, lakes, and rivers along with terrain contours, POIs, and elevation information for each.

Garmin 600t comes with 300 MB internal memory whereas Garmin 600 comes with 1700 MB. Both model support expandable memory using microSD card slot. Apart from those differences, Oregon 600t is the same device as its 600 counterpart in software, hardware, battery, compatible maps, connectivity features, BaseCamp compatibility, and all other respects.
