SkyPro XGPS160 GPS Receiver equipped with WAAS high sensitivity receiver, it makes use of both GPS and GLONASS systems for accurate location tracking even at high speed.
It is very small and intended to be used in companion of smartphones. XGPS160 is compatible with Apple, Android, Windows, and Surface devices and it can transmit data via Bluetooth to five devices at the same time.
It is a small square device with rounded corners measuring at 55mm H x 70mm W x 22mm D, and it weighs 71 grams. It is powered by a rechargeable 1400mAh battery that lasts for up to 10 hours for continuous use and when paired with one Bluetooth-enabled device only.
SkyPro XGPS160 is packaged with USB charging cable, cigarette lighter adapter, non-slip pad, and instruction manual. Non-slip pad is helpful when you use the receiver on boat, plane, or car. This GPS receiver is not waterproofed.
Also, you can use either the included USB cable with wall charger adapter or the cigarette lighter adapter to recharge the receiver. It only takes about 3 hours to fully recharge the battery.
Connecting with more devices will drain the battery quicker. Bluetooth range ideally reaches up to 10 meters in normal condition (open space), but the range will be reduced when battery level drops.
Connecting with Smartphone
The SkyPro XGPS160 does not have any screen. It has one power switch button and indicators for battery level, GPS signal, data logging, and connected devices.
Bluetooth connectivity indicator has five bars to represent the number of external devices connected to the receiver. It is compatible to basically all Bluetooth-enabled devices which support Serial Port Profile (SPP) including smartphones, tablets, and even laptops.
For iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, the pairing process can start immediately after the Bluetooth feature is turned on. It will search for your XGPS160 and you can pair them immediately.
For Android devices, however, it is necessary to download and install helper app to bridge the connections, for examples Bluetooth GPS and Bluetooth GPS Provider apps. Both of them are freely available from Google Play.
For Surface Tablets, there is no additional app required, but you may have to see which COM Port Windows is assigned to the GPS because you may be required to provide the COM number when running your GPS program.
For Windows 8.1 users, there is a known bug that prevents the computer from communicating with XGPS160 (the workaround for this issue is informed in the official website of Dual Electronics).
The company also informs that iOS 8.3 has a bug that blocks positioning updates. It is recommended that you turn off Location Services, restart the device, and turn Location Services back on again to overcome the issue.
GPS Status Tool App
The companion app, called Status Tool App, can be downloaded from iTunes App Store free of charge. GPS Status Tool App offers extended features such as automatic route recording, log file exporting, and other detailed information from SkyPro XGPS160.
For other operating systems, this receiver will help find location for any application or program that requires GPS positioning.
Status Tool App also displays information about the number of satellites the receiver connects to, signal strength, battery level, connectivity status, and more.
Some popular apps that are compatible with this receiver are Garmin Pilot, ForeFlight, and Wing-X Pro.
