Garmin has made plenty of positively-reviewed GPS-enabled devices for various applications such as sports, satellite navigation for vehicles, wristwatches, and even for marine activities. The company’s range of GPS sensors, including the GLO Portable, is equally popular to other categories too.
GPS and GLONASS Combined
GLO Portable does not solely depend on GPS satellites for location tracking, but it also connects to GLONASS satellite networks for better accuracy and faster positioning updates.
Compared to devices which use GPS only position tracking system, GLO Portable has the advantage of being able to connect to 24 more satellites.
Even when used on fast-moving vehicles such as boats, planes or race cars, GLO is able to lock on satellite-based positioning 20 percent faster and stay connected. The current position data can be updated 10 times in a second.
Apart from faster lock-on speed, the advantage of using both GPS and GLONASS is better reliability. In some areas where signals can be easily blocked (for examples mountains and canyons), the ability to make use of both systems can be really helpful to determine location.
GLO Portable measures at 4.19cm H x 1.78cm W x 7.72cm D, and it weighs 60.1 grams. Powered by an 1100mAh rechargeable battery, it will stay on for about 12 hours on a single charge.
The package includes GLO Portable, vehicle power cable, and USB cable. The main unit is a simple black-colored box with a power button, Bluetooth light indicator, and another LED indicator for various functions.
It has rubber feet at the bottom and a USB port below the power button. Garmin provides some optional accessories such as friction mount, which can be useful to keep the receiver sitting steadily while you drive fast or when using it on a boat or plane.
Using the GLO Portable
Garmin has made the GLO Portable to specifically connect to iPod, iPhone, or iPad, but it is also compatible with other Bluetooth-enabled smartphones including Android, Blackberry, and Windows.
When using this receiver with Android devices, you may need to download an additional app (Bluetooth GPS – Bluetooth GPS is a third-party application and is not affiliated with Garmin) from Google Play Store to allow Android system to pair it with Garmin GLO.
With iOS and other operating systems, it does not require any third party app for pairing . It will also connect to laptop or tablet with Bluetooth feature.
Bluetooth LED will produce solid blue when it is paired properly. The other indicator will give solid green color when it has acquired satellite connectivity.
With 10 times a second positioning updates and support from both GPS and GLONASS, the GLO Portable’s accuracy has a tolerance of only 3 meters.
When paired successfully, you can basically feed the location tracking data from this receiver to GPS-based app installed on your device.
Garmin has actually created some popular apps that are compatible with GLO Portable including but not limited to BlueChart Mobile, Fishing My-Cast, Garmin Fit, Garmin Pilot, and Garmin StreetPilot Onboard.
