DeLorme inReach Explorer – GPS Navigation And Satellite Communicator Combined

DeLorme InReach Explorer DeLorme inReach Explorer

If the previous inReach tracking devices were mainly designed for satellite-powered messaging, trigger an SOS for help and track your GPS coordinates. The new DeLorme inReach Explorer adds  new GPS navigation feature without omitting aforementioned functions.

The older variants are for emergency situations only with which you can request emergency rescues and send some basic texts with your friends. If you need navigation services, you will have to use a separate device such as a smartphone or stand-alone GPS unit.

Navigation Features

DeLorme inReach Explorer adds a full suite of navigation functions, meaning you don’t have to use a separate GPS unit or smartphone. In terms of design, the device looks like a simple phone with external antenna and few buttons below the screen.

The color screen also displays menu in the familiar grid view containing plenty of options including Map, Routes, Tracking, Messages, Waypoints, SOS, Trip Info, Compass, and Social.

The built-in digital compass is accompanied by other navigation-based statistics such as accelerometer sensors and barometric altimeter to deliver elevation measurement, speed, etc. The screen also displays a map containing waypoints, tracks, and route for backtracking purposes.

Connectivity Features

DeLorme inReach Explorer utilizes online Explorer portal to plan certain routes or share information with contacts. Others can view the plan and track your progress by using MapShare page. It is possible to connect this GPS unit with a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.

It is compatible with major mobile operating systems including iOS and Android including Kindle Fire. If you use DeLorme’s Earthmate app, you can see topographic maps and download them for offline use.

The inReach uses Iridium satellite network, and the SOS function will access GEOS rescue monitoring center. In emergency situation, you can use its two-way communication to provide more details about your location rather than GPS coordinates only to the rescue team.

You can send text messages containing up to 160 characters and GPS coordinates to email addresses or cell phone numbers all around the world; this feature will also be available in the Earthmate app. It is even possible to post updates to some social websites.

This device uses a 2,450 mAh lithium polymer battery to provide enough power for up to 100 hours with 10-minute tracking mode. You can adjust the tracking mode intervals from every 10 minutes to every 4 hours. It will not only track your location, but also speed and elevation.

Flexible Subscription Plans

Instead of using annual subscription, which can be expensive, DeLorme inReach Explorer offers multiple yet flexible plans for users. You are no longer tied to a subscription fee; this is also an improvement over the previous models.

There is even a subscription plan for one month only, allowing you to spend only what you need. In case you are a seasonal adventurer and you only use inReach occasionally, you will not have to pay the subscription fee for a full year. You can also change the subscription from one month to a year or the other way around without any additional fee.

The Bad Elf 2200 GPS Pro has a 128 x 96 dots LCD display with backlight, lanyard loop, embedded rechargeable lithium ion battery, USB port, 64MB of flash memory, and three buttons including on/off switch, Bluetooth, and GPS.

Its overall dimension measures at 3-inch x 2.4-inch x 0.7-inch; it weighs only 3.2 oz.

Recieve GPS Data Via Bluetooth Connectivity

One of the highlights of Bad Elf GPS Pro is its Bluetooth connectivity feature allowing you to connect it with 5 devices simultaneously. It is compatible with iPod touch (2nd generation and above), iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, and 5S), iPad (1st to 4th generations), iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina display.

The main purpose is that you and 4 other iOS devices users will be able to share the GPS data from one Bad Elf GPS Pro. This kind of connectivity can be quite useful for many different navigation-based applications such as in jet pilots where the entire crew can see exactly the same navigational data on their iOS devices, despite the fact that there is only one GPS Pro on the plane.

Another example, its can also be used on a car, so your family can simply connect some iOS devices to a single GPS Pro in order to figure out the current location via relevant GPS-based apps installed in your iOS devices.

Data Logger

In most cases, a compact stand-alone GPS device is easier to use and carry than smartphones. The GPS Pro can record data for up to more than 100 hours of adventure, meaning you don’t have to keep location-based app running on your phones.

You can choose to save the data as a single trip or separate it depending on your personal preference. It saves your phone’s battery power yet you can get the entire data transferred to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch at the end of the journey.

It is also possible to mark any particular place as POI with a press of a button. Bad Elf Utility app will offload the data stored on the GPS pro for storage on compatible devices. This data can be emailed or shared.

Battery Life

When connected to iOS devices via Bluetooth, GPS Pro can keep on running for up to 16 hours on a single charge. It will send data in every 10 seconds, but it is actually a user-configurable option. When operating as a stand-alone GPS device with the Bluetooth turned off, the battery life can last up to 30 hours.

The device will display basic GPS-related information such as location, speed, altitude, heading, and lock status. It works best with Bad Elf Utility App which you can download from iTunes for free.

It is worth mentioning that this GPS unit meets the requirements of Apple’s MFi, meaning it is also compatible with any location-based app available on App Store.
