Introduction To  Garmin Forerunner 35 and  235 GPS Watch

Garmin has been recently busy since last May with the release of at least five new wearables in the past several months. Forerunner 35 is one of the latest iterations in the popular running watch series released in August 31, 2016.

Earlier this year, the company also launched Forerunner 235, the more sophisticated model compared to the latest one. Both watches have shock resistant structure, activity tracking, running metrics, accelerometer for indoor training, and additional features such as smartphone connectivity for notification and rechargeable battery.

Garmin Forerunner 35

Designed to be a straightforward running watch, Forerunner 35 serves well in Garmin’s range of affordable wearables. In fact, you can consider this the natural successor for Forerunner 25 which sits at the bottom of the series. The biggest improvement over its predecessor is the built-in heart rate monitor, eliminating the needs to use chest strap during exercise.

Overall dimension measures at 35.5 mm X 40.7 mm x 13.3 mm, and it weighs slightly more than 37 grams. The square screen is small yet capable of producing a readable 128 x 128 pixels resolution. Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the watch can stay on for about 9 days in watch mode or 13 hours in training mode.

Equipped with GPS, Forerunner 35 measures distance, pace, intervals, and speed of your run. The combination of wrist-based heart sensor and on-board GPS allows you to measure and review your statistics without additional accessory of any sort, not even a connected smartphone to see your statistics and progress.

Nearly all basic performance features are available including Virtual Pacer, Personal Records, Interval Training, Auto Lap, Auto Pause, and heart rate-based calorie computation.

Forerunner 35’s main functions do not require a connected smartphone to work, but you can pair them to make use of Smartphone Notification and Live Tracking features.

Smartphone Notification displays alerts for email, texts, incoming calls, and push notifications on the watch screen, so it provides the functionality of a smartwatch as well.

Live Tracking requires Garmin Connect Mobile app to work; as the name suggests, you can let your friends and families know your whereabouts in real time while you are running.

In addition, Forerunner 35 comes equipped with activity tracking to measure steps and sleep quality. Garmin also provides auto goal feature and inactivity alert to motivate you to be physically active on daily basis.

The watch features Garmin Move IQ which automatically recognizes different activities for examples running, walking, cycling (it requires bike/cadence sensor for accurate metric analysis).

Garmin Forerunner 235

For more serious runners, the Forerunner 235 is probably a better choice. Compared to the Forerunner 35, it has better screen resolution and more detailed running metrics. It comes with GPS, GLONASS, and compatibility with Garmin Connect IQ.

Forerunner 235 measures at 45.0 mm x 45.0 mm x 11.7 mm; it weighs 42 grams. Its round-shaped screen produces 215 x 180 pixels resolution. The rechargeable battery lasts for about 9 days in watch mode (with activity tracking, heart rate monitoring, and smartphone notifications) or 11 hours in training mode between recharge.

Connect IQ is Garmin’s official applications store to give users the option to customize or add functions to select devices including Forerunner 235. From the store, you can download additional apps such as hiker, maps and watch face. You can also use any photo from your phone as background with free Garmin Face-It app, available for iOS and Android devices.

Apart from hardware specification, the biggest difference between Forerunner 35 and Forerunner 235 is that the latter has an advanced running feature called VO2 Max. It estimates your body capacity to use oxygen based on heart rate during an exercise.

Forerunner 235 is one of few wearables by Garmin that can utilize this function without chest strap, but Garmin recommends using external chest strap for more accurate results. VO2 Max helps determine estimated Recovery Time, available on board as well.

Another addition is Training Effect, given as a scale from 1.0 to 5.0. The idea behind this feature is to help you learn how certain physical activity with different intensity affects your fitness level. Scale 1.0 – 1.9 indicates endurance improvement, while the maximum 5.0 scale suggests high improvement but with the risk of temporary tiredness.Training Effect data is available from the History page on the device.

Garmin GPS Running Watches

Garmin GPS running watches of Forerunner series has so many iterations since the first time it was launched. Now that it has been in the market for more than a decade, Forerunner comes in many different versions with some of them feature smartwatch capabilities of displaying notifications from a connected smartphone. Many of Forerunner watches also offer activity tracking to measure steps count, calories, sleep time, and period of inactivity. Here are few of the most notable Forerunner versions by Garmin.

Garmin Forerunner 15

Garmin Forerunner 15
Forerunner 15

Forerunner 15 gives the bare minimum requirements as running watch to measure distance, pace, calories, and heart rate (when paired with an ANT+ heart rate strap).

In addition to those, this watch also serves as day-to-day activity tracker that calculates number of steps taken, calories burned, sleep time, and period of inactivity via a visualized timing-bar.

Featuring a small display of less than an inch square, the screen produces a resolution of 55 x 32 pixels. Battery lasts for about 8 hours in GPS mode or 5 weeks in watch mode with activity tracking. In the more recent versions of Forerunner, Garmin has managed to provide a single accelerometer for both activity tracking and indoor/treadmill running.

In Forerunner 15, however, you still need a foot pod for indoor running. Besides measuring distance, pace, calories, and heart rate when running, the watch offers Auto Pause and Auto Lap features with audible alerts when you hit a milestone or break your personal record. It also has Virtual Pacer to set up a little bit of competition to achieve faster pace. Forerunner 15 is available in many different models with color variations and heart rate strap bundling option.

Garmin Forerunner 25

Garmin Forerunner 25
Forerunner 25

Stepping up the game, Gamin brought the Forerunner 25 to the market. It is available in two different versions: small and big. The former appears to be intended to accommodate the usually-smaller wrist of female, while the latter is in the standard size. Each version has a screen that produces 128 x 128 pixels resolution.

The main features remain the same with capabilities of measuring important metrics during a run such as distance, pace, calories, and heart rate. When used as an activity tracker, it calculates steps, sleep time, calories, and minutes of inactivity.

In the running performance department, there is an addition of time/distance alert which triggers alarm when you reach specific goal. A major improvement comes in the form of smartphone compatibility that the Forerunner 25 is now able to display smartphone notification on its own screen. Notifications include texts, emails, and incoming phone calls.

The accelerometer in this watch is used for both activity tracking and indoor running, eliminating the need for a separate foot pod. The smaller version has a battery life of up to 8 hours in GPS mode or 8 weeks in watch mode and activity tracking, while the larger one has 10 hours of GPS running time or 10 weeks in watch mode with active fitness tracking.

Garmin Forerunner 230

Garmin Forerunner 230
Forerunner 230

Getting into the more serious territory, Forerunner 230 does more than just calculating basic metrics such as distance, pace, calories, and heart rate. When paired with heart monitor, the watch also measures VO2 Max, or the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume.

The idea is that you can improve your performance as long as you have not reached the VO2 Max limit, because increasing training intensity at any point in the maximum VO2 state will not bring improvement unless you do that gradually. Based on VO2 Max, more features are possible such as Recovery Advisor, Race Predictor, and Training Effect.

There is an accelerometer to do all the activity tracking and replace the necessity for using a foot pod when running on a treadmill. Forerunner 230 is compatible with smartphone for notifications and controlling music player as well as acting as remote for VIRB action camera.

More than those, it has Connect IQ support for users to download and install additional apps to change watch face, widgets, and add more sport functions. Forerunner 230 is powered by rechargeable battery that lasts for about 16 hours in GPS mode or 5 weeks in watch mode with activity tracking and smart notifications on. Another notable feature is GLONASS support.

Forerunner 235

Forerunner 235 shares more similarities than differences with the previously mentioned model. The screen in both models is the same at 1.23-inch diameter, producing 215 x 180 pixels resolution. All running performance features including VO2 Max calculations and activity tracking functions are all the same.

The big difference is that Forerunner 235 comes with wrist-based heart rate sensor, meaning there is no need to wear a chest strap to get all the measurements. Such sensor is mounted on the back of the watch and it uses two LED lights that shine through the capillaries to measure fluctuations in blood flow. Connect IQ support is also present in this watch.

Forerunner 630

A real big leap forward from all the above models is contained in the touchscreen Forerunner 630. It has all the capable treats for examples Connect IQ support, VO2 Max calculation, and activity tracking.

There is no wrist-based heart rate sensor, because the watch offers Running Dynamics delivered in three different variables including stride length, ground contact time, and vertical ratio. However, these measurements are only possible when the watch is paired with HRM Run; other variants of heart rate monitor cannot feed such data to the watch.

Compatibility with smartphones is maintained. It still does smart notification, music player control, and VIRB action camera control as well.

Introduction

Forerunner 225 was released nearly a year ago (May 12, 2015), and the Forerunner 230 followed about 5 months later (October 21, 2015). Although the gap between launch dates was not that long, differences in features between the two running watches are pretty much noticeable.

Garmin Forerunner 225

The most prominent feature of Forerunner 225 is wrist-based heart rate sensor. In fact, it is the first running watch from Garmin to introduce the heart rate computation without requiring additional chest strap.

The latest Garmin watches uses a proprietary technology called Elevate, but Forerunner 225 is equipped with a sensor developed by Mio. To do the computation, there are two LED lights on the back of the watch that shine through your skin and detect slight changes in blood circulations in the capillaries. Minimizing the interference from ambient lights, the watch has a seal to block any external source of light.

In addition to the usual features of tracking pace, speed, and distance, Forerunner 225 delivers colorful gauges to determine your current heart rate zones and BPM in real time. These gauges help you determine the proper training intensity depending on your current target.

  • gray color indicates that you are in warm-up zone or about 50% of maximum heart rate
  • blue color represents resting zone or 60% of maximum heart rate
  • green means aerobic zone or 70% of maximum heart rate
  • orange is 80% of maximum heart rate or the threshold
  • red indicates that you are exceeding 90% of maximum heart rate

Performance features include Auto Lap, Auto Pause, Custom Workouts, Pace Alerts, Personal Records, and Interval Training. Forerunner 225 includes a complete set of activity tracking features to count daily steps, calories burned, sleep time, and inactivity level. Fitness tracking functions use accelerometer, which also replaces GPS during indoor run on treadmill.

There is an auto goal feature that determines today’s goal based on yesterday’s achievement. The goal increases or decreases depending on today’s total steps taken. If you surpasses the number of steps you made yesterday, the goal automatically increases. If you fail to meet the automatically determined goal, the watch will reduce the requirement.

In general, this is a better approach than having a preset goal of 10,000 steps every day. Thanks to wrist-based heart rate sensor, the watch can track your heart rate all day long even during sleep without wearing chest strap.

You can pair Forerunner 225 with a compatible smartphone, but it is only possible if you install Garmin Connect Mobile App on the phone. When paired, both devices serve live tracking functions, allowing your friends and families to track your statistics in real time. Powered by rechargeable battery, Forerunner 225 can stay on for about 10 hours in GPS mode (with heart rate sensor) or up to 4 weeks in watch mode.

Garmin Forerunner 230

If you are moving from Forerunner 225 to Forerunner 230, you will find both added and missing features. Omitted functionality is wrist-based heart rate sensor, meaning you have to use additional chest strap to take advantage of heart rate computation of the 230. When paired with compatible strap, however, Forerunner 230 delivers more useful statistics including VO2 Max, Recovery Advisor and Race Predictor.

Another addition is improved smartphone connectivity. When paired with compatible smartphone, Forerunner 230 does more than live tracking and statistics uploading. The watch can display notifications received on phone such as texts, emails, calendar reminder, and more.

You can also control music player directly from the watch. Moreover, Forerunner 230 receives location tracking from both GPS and GLONASS satellites so the accuracy should improve even when you are running in a neighborhood full of skyscrapers or thick vegetation. In terms of design, Forerunner 230 also has slightly bigger screen and better resolution.

The best improvement is Connect IQ support. It is Garmin’s app store from which you can download and install more apps to add functionality or customize watch faces. GPS and GLONASS can be more useful in this case because Connect IQ offers plenty of applications for other sport activities including hiking where you may find yourself in heavily-covered terrain.

Without wrist-based heart rate sensor, the battery in Forerunner 230 lasts for about 16 hours in training mode or up to 5 weeks in watch mode with activity tracking and active smartphone notifications. Activity tracking features with accelerometer have the exact same functions as found in Forerunner 225.
