Overview of Garmin fenix 3

The Garmin fenix 3 is a combination of everyday casual watch, fully-featured fitness/activity tracker, and advanced navigation tool. As compared to Garmin’s fenix 2, the comparison chart above shows the improvements and the differences between the two fenix.

Design

To start with, fenix 3 has an always-on rounded watch face with customizable on-screen displays. Instead of using a touchscreen LCD, Garmin has chosen to go with a conventional control scheme by using five round buttons along the screen’s sides.

Those who cannot really appreciate touch-controlling on small screen will be glad to have this feature.

Most sport watches or activity trackers lack of good-looking design in favor of functionality, yet the fenix 3 has managed to come out with stylish design suitable as everyday accessory.

It is available in three variants including gray, silver, and sapphire; while the first two are basically the same things but with different colors, the last one has metal strap and scratch resistant glass as the screen’s exterior.

Hardware

Physical dimension measures at 2.0-inch H x 2.0-inch W x 0.6-inch D; the screen is 1.2-inch transflective LCD with backlight producing 218 x 218 pixels resolution. Negative mode is provided as well.

Garmin fenix 3 is powered by a rechargeable 300mAh Lithium-ion battery to generate 6-weeks of power in watch mode on a single charge.

The Garmin fenix 3 EXO antenna includes not only GPS, but also GLONASS supports for better accuracy.

Summary of Tracking Features

If you are familiar with the range of Garmin wearable devices, the multiple sport profiles of fenix 3 is built based on Forerunner 920XT, Garmin’s flagship sport watch.

It has all fitness tracking capabilities of 920XT including running, swimming, and cycling features.

• Running features consist of at least Virtual Pacer, VO2 Max, running dynamics (ground contact, vertical oscillation, etc), personal records, and accelerometer.

• Cycling features may include cadence sensor, ANT+ power meters compatibility, and multiple bike profiles.

• Swimming features such as stroke recognition, pool lap, swim metrics, and distance are also included

• fenix 3 functions as activity tracker too.

Other features include Smart Notifications to display text messages, email, and other alerts when connected to compatible phone, Bluetooth connectivity, and Garmin Connect.

Navigation Features

The Garmin fenix 3 has GPS/GLONASS supports thanks to the stainless steel EXO antenna, 3-axis electronic compass, and barometric altimeter sensor.

The fenix 3 is also compatible with Garmin’s tempe external temperature sensor.

There is even Ski-board mode to measure distance, vertical drop, and run counter.

Connect IQ

fenix 3 is one of few Garmin’s creations to include Connect IQ support. It is basically a platform for third-party developers to create apps for the sport watch.

The SDK is available for download at Garmin’s official website allowing everyone to customize fenix 3 watch face, create widgets, additional apps, or simply modify the sensor data to new metrics.

Garmin Fenix 2 Specifications & Features

Introduction

A smartwatch is certainly on its glorious days now. The common features include connectivity with smartphones and fitness tracking functions. One of the best companies manufacturing GPS and fitness tracking devices is Garmin. This Fenix 2 Multisport Watch introduced by Garmin on February 20, 2014.

Design

The physical dimension measures at 1.9-inch H x 1.9-inch W x 0.7-inch D; it weighs 3.19 oz, so it is considerably thick. The display diameter is at 1.2-inch and it is a transflective monochrome LCD with a resolution of 70 x 70 pixels.

The hardware comes with GPS-enabled feature, high sensitivity receiver, electronic compass, barometer altimeter, vibration alert, and even smart notification. The Garmin Fenix 2 uses a 500 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 5 weeks of power in watch mode and 50 hours in GPS mode.

Fitness Tracking Features

The Garmin’s Fenix 2 is not specifically designed for any particular sport activity. It does plenty of tracking functions suitable for various outdoor sports such as running, climbing, riding, hiking, skiing or swimming. You can pair Fenix2 with a heart rate monitor to activate the VO2 max function.

Runners get plenty of data fields including pace, distance, time, lap data for each of those, and heart rate. You also get running dynamics metrics, for example vertical oscillation, cadence, and ground contact time.

Besides VO2 max feature, pairing with heart rate monitor also turns on the recovery advisor function which calculates the amount of time you need to recover based on the previous run. The VO2 max statistics are combined with your personal data (age and gender) by Race Predictor to determine or estimate the best possible race time.

Moreover, Fenix 2 also has Virtual Partner feature and it produces alerts when you are below or above certain thresholds such as speed, distance, heart rate, proximity and more.

Swimming

Fenix 2 by Garmin also has swimming-related metrics. It is possible to inform the device about the pool size, swim pace, track length, time, and splits. When used for open-water swimming, the GPS tracks distance while the accelerometer tracks stroke information.

Ski

For snowboarding, Fenix 2 calculates vertical drop, distance, speed, and automatic run counter. You can wear it also when cycling, or mount it on a bike and pair it with any ANT+ speed/cadence sensor to get accurate statistics of your cycling.

More Functions

Equipped with Altimeter, Barometer, and Compass, it can give accurate location tracking data and even temperature reading. Furthermore, you can pair it with smartphones (it requires Bluetooth 4.0), to get notification alerts from almost all apps. A compatible smartphone can even upload your statistics and Live Tracking function.
