Introduction

Forerunner 15 was announced back in May 2014, while Forerunner 25 was made public this August 2015. With a gap of more than one year, the newer device introduces plenty of improvements.

However, Forerunner 25 is built based on Forerunner 15, and therefore similarities in terms of functions are expected. Both are listed under budget-friendly category under Forerunner series, but there are serious differences including the addition of Bluetooth Smart, Smartphone Notification, and Live Tracking features in the Forerunner 25.

Garmin Forerunner 15

It has been more than a year since Forerunner 15 was first announced back in May 2014. Forerunner 15 is available in two sizes and five color options. The screen for the big size measures at 0.98-inch x 0.94-inch, and this is slightly shrunk in the smaller models.

Display resolution remains the same in both variants at 55 x 32 pixels. The watch is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion to keep it on for up to 5 weeks in watch mode or 8 hours in training mode.

As a running watch, Forerunner 15 covers all the basic functionalities to measure metrics such as distance, pace, and calories. It actually approximates heart rate when paired with a compatible sensor.

The bundle version includes a heart rate monitor (HRM1). Many popular running features from Garmin exist in this watch for examples Virtual Pacer and Personal Records.

The former allows you to set a particular running pace, so the watch can give alert if you stray too far ahead or behind. A handful of common records are recorded, and the watch will produce alerts to notify you anytime you break those personal records such as longest distance or fastest run.

Besides Auto Pause and Auto Lap, Forerunner 15 also gives compatibility with optional foot pod. When paired, the watch can measure pace and distance even when training indoor.

Activity Tracking functionalities are active too. There are step counter, move bar, sleep monitoring, and auto goal to automatically learn user’s activity level to configure new goal.

Garmin Forerunner 25

Compared to Forerunner 15, the display sizes in both small and big variants of Forerunner 25 are actually smaller but they have better resolution at 128 x 128 pixels.

All features found in the Forerunner 15 can be found in Forerunner 25 too, but the latter brings some good additions.

The first notable addition is Bluetooth Smart that allows you to upload your running statistics to Garmin Connect via smartphone. Bluetooth also functions as a bridge to forward notifications received on smartphones to the watch.

All notifications for texts, emails, or phone calls will be sent to Forerunner 25 so there is a little bit of smartwatch in it. Another addition is Live Tracking to stream your location on an online map so your friends and family can stay updated with your current location in real time.

Battery life in Forerunner 25 is also better that it can now stay on for up to 8 weeks in watch mode or 10 hours in training mode. Activity tracking with the same set of features is found in Forerunner 15 and Forerunner 25.

Introduction

Forerunner, the sport watch series by Garmin designed specifically for runners, is one the most frequently updated categories. The Forerunner 225 was announced in May 12, 2015, while the Forerunner 15 has been available for about a year since 2014.

There is huge gap between them, and certainly big difference in terms of features and hardware specifications.

Garmin Forerunner 15

Forerunner 15 was announced in May 2014. It is available in two versions, one is with a bundled heart rate monitor and another is without.

The main units are identical in both versions. There are also two different sizes, large and small, which seem to be designed for male and female wrists respectively.

All basic features of a running watch are covered with metric calculations that summarize running distance, pace, and time. When paired with an optional or the bundled heart rate monitor, it will also measure heart rate and heart rate zone.

It was mainly designed to work in outdoor environment where GPS satellite acquisition should be ideally quick and easy. For indoor training, you must use an additional foot pod that attaches to the shoe lace to have your running metrics measured.

Besides the basic metrics, Forerunner 15 also gives extra features including auto lap, virtual pacer, heart rate based calories computation, and activity tracking. The auto lap function gives an alert anytime you complete a mile.

The alert comes as a beep and flashing screen to display the time you needed to compete that mile. This running watch supports on-device personal record to summarize your total time, average pace, calories burned, and distance covered when you finish a run.

In case you break a personal record such longest run or fastest lap, the device will notify you. Virtual Pacer allows you set a target pace and compares it with your current run.

You can save your metrics and upload it Garmin Connect community where you can analyze it and get more detailed summary. Activity tracking functions are very simple too. It provides step counter, a move bar, auto goal, and sleep monitoring.

Garmin Forerunner 225

Announced in May 2015, this is the latest update in Garmin’s Forerunner series. Of course, it is better in literally all aspects compared to the Forerunner 15.

The only thing that’s missing is Virtual Pacer feature. Apart from that, everything is optimized and better. Forerunner 225 has an inch color display producing 180 x 180 pixels resolution.

All running metrics you can find in the Forerunner 15 are available in the Forerunner 225 including distance, time, pace, and calorie computation.

Additional features such as auto lap and auto pause are provided as well. Heart rate calculation in the Forerunner 225 is more advanced because you don’t have to actually wear a heart rate strap.

The sensor for this function is planted on the back of the watch. Forerunner 225 is in fact the first running watch from Garmin to feature wrist-based heart rate sensor.

The same thing can be said for indoor training; instead of wearing an additional foot pod, the watch is equipped with built-in accelerometer to handle non-GPS running metrics.

Forerunner 225 is Bluetooth-enabled so you can pair it with Garmin Connect app installed on your compatible smartphone. Anytime you complete a run, the app will take over and upload your data to the online community.

Additional feature that comes with Bluetooth pairing is LiveTrack which allows other users to see and check your data/position in real time.
