Introduction

Rino is a series of rugged two-way radio communication handhelds by Garmin designed for outdoor activities featuring built-in high transmission power.

Intended to be a dependable alternative to cell phone services during rough outdoor activities, Rino 650T is IPX7 rated to withstand exposure to water of up to 1 meter depth for about 30 minutes.

And because this is from Garmin, this radio also gets quite plenty of navigational features such as high sensitivity GPS, barometric altimeter, and custom maps compatibility, making it a communication-navigational hybrid.

Similar to previous devices in the series, Rino 650T comes with 2.6-inch color display. It is a glove-friendly screen that produces 160 x 240 pixels resolution.

It is powered by a removable lithium-ion battery, providing up to 14 hours of life. When the power runs out, you can switch to an optional AA battery pack to give an instant additional power for up to 4 more hours while you are recharging the lithium-ion one.

Among all navigational features included, there are 3-axis electronic compass, NOAA weather service, and the ability to add more maps with Custom Maps software.

Preloaded TOPO U.S. 100K Maps

It comes with a preloaded TOPO U.S. 100K maps, but it also accepts additional maps including topographic, road, and marine. The built-in internal memory has a capacity of 4.5GB, and there is a microSD card slot for expansion.

BirdsEye Satellite Imagery

This means you can load a BlueChart g2 preloaded memory card or TOPO U.S. 24K maps. Rino 650T supports BirdsEye Satellite Imagery (a 1-year subscription is included) and is geocaching friendly.

Custom Maps software basically allows you to transform conventional paper maps into electronic downloadable format which you can load to the device.

One of the best features is Position Reporting which combines Rino 650T’s communicating and navigating abilities. This function allows you to send your exact location to other users so they can pinpoint your location on their own maps.

All the notes received from other users are also time-stamped for more detailed analysis. Together, its radio and navigational powers are dependable during emergency situation when you need other people to find you.

The NOAA radio supports Specific Area Message Encoding, allowing you to see warnings from National Weather Service.

With subscription to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, Rino 650T can make use of two additional features including BaseCamp and BaseStation.

The former is map management software to view waypoints, tracks, routes, and organize your maps. The software displays topographic map data in either 3D or 2D format on computer screen including elevation profiles.

As long as your Rino is subscribed to and paired with BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, you can transfer unlimited amount of satellite images.

BaseStation extends Rino 650T’s tracking ability that you will be able to view multiple Rino units from a laptop. To use this function, your laptop must be loaded with BaseCamp, while Rino will serve as an antenna or router.

For each contact you have on your Rino, you can track up 2,000 points of information. Everything takes benefits from GPS, so you don’t have to depend on cell phone services.
