Dash Cam

Garmin provided a dash cam as built-in feature of the DriveAssist 50LMT. The camera features including loop recording, wide-angle lens, and of course, GPS stamp to mark time and location of any road incident recorded or captured. The lens also has swivel design to allow for viewing adjustment.

The dash cam planted in DriveAssist 50LMT brings accident detection G-sensor to recognize any sudden braking or sharp turn; when anything that potentially resembles incident-related circumstances, the camera saves the last recorded footage so it does not get overwritten in its loop-recording. A microSD is even included in the package.

You can play the video footage or view captured images directly on the navigator’s screen or on your computer using Garmin Dash Cam player. However, it does not have sound recording. This accessory is designed in such a way that you can remove it easily from the main unit, useful when you need to take a snapshot of incident evidence such as broken headlight, dent hood, or fallen-off mirrors, etc.

Thanks to the built-in camera, DriveAssist 50LMT provides warning based on both driving map and real-time road conditions. There are at least 4 important driving assistance features from the camera including:

  • Forward Collision Warning: on-screen and audible alerts anytime your car is too close to vehicle ahead.
  • Lane Departure Warning: when swift to illegal lane at 40mph or more, the navigator triggers an alert.
  • Go Alert: a notification to tell you that red light turns to green.
  • Real Vision: the device switches from map view to real view of the road when you’re reaching a destination.

Screen and Updates

DriveAssist 50LMT is not the biggest navigator indeed, but the 5-inch screen provides enough room to see every direction and notification clearly. The screen supports pinch-and-zoom operation, and a single tap opens Up Ahead display to see any upcoming POI along your route such as ATMs, rest area, gas stations, and more.

Maps of United States and Canada along with several Caribbean Islands and most of Mexico are preloaded (North America Maps). Millions of POIs are available on-board as well. With every purchase of DriveAssist 50LMT, Garmin gives free lifetime map updates available for up to 4 times a year. Garmin Traffic updates come free of charge, too. All traffic information is sent directly to the navigator without requiring network coverage. Updates may include possible delays, detours, and confirmation whether or not you are driving on the fastest route.

Smartphone Notifications

When connected to a compatible smartphone, DriveAssist 50LMT can bridge communication over phones. Because it has microphone and speakers, you can have hands-free conversation so your hands stay on the steering wheel and your eyes remain on the road all the time.

Bluetooth connectivity with phone allows the navigator to display smartphone notification on the 5-inch screen too. Texts, emails, calendar reminder, and incoming phone calls are displayed on the navigator’s screen. In addition, you can control the device by using spoken commands, so you can use the navigator even without touching it.

Driver Awareness

Apart from camera-based alert system, DriveAssist 50LMT is equipped with Driver Awareness feature to give you important heads-up about upcoming road conditions based on information provided in the map. Some of the most useful alerts are for sharp curves, school zone, railroad crossings, speed camera locations, changes in speed limit, and upcoming traffic congestion.

To make it even more complete, DriveAssist 50LMT is compatible with BC 30 wireless backup camera and Garmin babyCam (both are available from Garmin). A backup camera automatically feeds footage to the navigator’s screen anytime you engage in Reverse gear, allowing you to see all obstacles behind the car. Garmin babyCam is the first in-vehicle baby camera that feeds real-time footage of the backseat to the navigator’s display.

Garmin DriveSmart 60LMT Specs & Features

Display

Measuring at 6.7-inch W x 3.7-inch H x 7-inch D, the DriveSmart 60LMT brings a 6-inch dual-orientation color TFT screen that produces 800 x 480 pixels resolution. The screen supports pinch-and-zoom operation to let you scale and see the best possible view easily.

Detailed maps of North America are preloaded. Including with several Caribbean Islands and most of Mexico. Map updates are available free of charge from Garmin’s official website for up to four times a year. This service is provided for lifetime at no additional cost of any sort.

With millions of POIs in its database, you can select any popular location or business right on the main driving map without pressing too many buttons and navigating through deep menu choices.

On the right side of the screen, there is a complementing Up Ahead display accessible with a single tap; you can also dismiss it in the same way. Up Ahead compiles information about any upcoming POI on your route such as gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, and milestones to help you keep track of distance.

Traffic Updates

Similar to free map updates for lifetime, traffic information by Garmin’s Traffic Service is updated all the time and available at no cost. Traffic updates are sent directly to the device without requiring connections with cellular data.

Traffic information deliver real-time updates about road conditions including construction sites and possible congestion due to various reasons. Possible detours and delays are also covered.

Foursquare POIs

POIs in the DriveSmart 60LMT are sourced from Foursquare service. They are continuously updated based on real people’s reviews and feedbacks so any new data about new location and its information are expected to be more accurate. When you search for a particular destination or address on the device, the most relevant results from Foursquare will appear on top of the others.

More detailed information about any specific business or address is available such as ratings, opening hours, price range, etc. Pairing with a smartphone requires Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, also available for free.

Voice-activated Navigation

DriveSmart 60LMT responds to spoken commands. Various features are accessible simply by speaking out commands for examples inputting address, initiating search function, or navigating through menus; all are possible without even touching the screen.

Built-in microphone and speakers can be used for making hands-free phone calls too. If you pair a Bluetooth-enabled phone with the navigator, you can have hands-free conversation over phone bridged by the DriveSmart. It also means your hands stay of the steering wheel and your eyes on the road.

Bluetooth connectivity activates the Smart Notification. If your smartphone is compatible with Smartphone Link app (available for Android and iOS devices), DriveSmart 60LMT can display notifications on its own screen. Standard notifications including but not limited to texts, emails, calendar reminder, and calls are visible. With the app, notifications are user-configurable.

Another extended smartphone-aided feature is information-sharing. Using the phone’s existing data plan, it is easy to share your destinations, parking locations, recent POIs, and more. There is an import function to download destinations from the navigator to the phone. Garmin Live Services are available from the app interface with which you get weather reports, gas prices, traffic cameras photos, nearby garages, and traffic updates.

Driver Awareness

The most highly-appreciated feature is Driver Awareness that alerts driver for potentially alarming road conditions including sharp curves, railroad crossings, school zone, changes in speed limit, and sudden traffic congestion. DriveSmart 60LMT even reminds driver to take a rest during long drive. In some locations, Driver Awareness is able to tell where the traffic cameras and red lights are.

All the usual Garmin’s navigational services are present such as Lane Assist with Junction View, Speed Limit Indicator, Trip Planner, and Route Avoidance. For more complete navigational features, you can install BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera and Garmin babyCam (sold separately).

Introduction

Garmin Drive series, with its set of Driver Awareness features, is actually the base models of the entire range of new navigational devices from the company. While most will find that the Drive is very capable device to deliver road map, points of interest, trip-related functions, and updates, Garmin offers the more advanced lineup with the DriveSmart series.

Most features between Drive and DriveSmart are alike, but the latter simply has more to offer. The added feature is smartphone notification function, so it is not just a marginal extra. It complements Garmin’s idea to encourage safe-driving.

Garmin Drive 50LMT

Built on the most basic offering in Drive series, the 50LMT is actually the base model added with lifetime map and traffic updates. It comes with detailed maps of U.S. or U.S. and Canada, depending on model and plenty of on-the-road navigational features.

The screen is 5-inch dual-orientation type, producing 480 x 272 pixels resolution. You can consider this a basic yet modern car GPS device from Garmin equipped with many familiar features.

Biggest feature is certainly the Driver Awareness. Garmin Drive 50LMT is equipped with an alert system that notifies driver about upcoming road conditions or situations. The device produces alerts based on maps for potentially dangerous circumstances for examples sudden sharp curves, railroad crossings, speed limit changes, school zone, animal crossings, speed camera locations, traffic lights, and upcoming traffic jams. Fatigue warning gives alerts during long drives and suggests some rest areas.

In many previous car navigational devices from Garmin, some features such as school zone warning and speed limit changes are available, but Driver Awareness improves them by bringing some more useful alerts. In addition, there is Up Ahead functionality to display POIs along your route including gas stations, rest areas, ATMs, or milestones. You can enable this function to appear on the right side of the screen without leaving the main driving map display.

LMT stands for Lifetime Maps and Traffic, meaning that the device comes with free map updates and traffic information without time limitations, subscription fee, or additional charge. Map updates are available for up to 4 times every year and can be downloaded from Garmin’s official website.

Drive 50LMT is packaged with vehicle power cable that doubles as traffic antenna. Traffic update and information is delivered to the device, requiring no connection with smartphone. Even when driving in poor-signal area, traffic information is still provided.

Spoken navigation no longer uses long street names and numbers on the Drive 50LMT. It uses recognizable landmarks as points of references such as traffic lights, buildings, and popular places. POIs are sourced from Foursquare database, and it gets updated based on real people’s opinions and reviews so the information should be more accurate.

Furthermore, Direct Access feature takes the navigation off the road into more specific area including airport and department store to help you find parking lot, nearest exit to your destination, etc. Other features include trip planner, trip log, lane assist with junction view, and compatibility with optional wireless camera (BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera and babyCam).

Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT

Still in the same Drive series line up, the DriveSmart 50LMT is an iteration of the basic Drive models with one big improvement: smartphone notification. To do that however, Garmin has to add two more technologies including Bluetooth and Voice activated navigation.  It comes with detailed maps of  North America.

To use smart notification feature, you must pair DriveSmart 50LMT with a compatible smartphone. Once paired, you can receive phone calls directly from the device thanks to built-in speaker and microphone. There is no need to take the phone out of your pocket, so your hands are constantly on the steering wheel.

By downloading Smartphone Link free companion app, you can also view notifications such as texts and apps on its 5-inch screen. The app comes with free and paid Garmin Live Services such as fuel prices, weather, dynamic parking, and more. Smartphone Link app is compatible with iOS (7.0 or later) and Android (2.2 or newer) devices.

Built-in microphone is not only for making phone calls, but also for voice-activated navigation. Instead of pressing menu buttons and search, you can communicate with DriveSmart 50LMT simply by speaking out commands and ask for certain address or POIs. It is possible to turn off this feature without disabling the spoken navigation. Apart from those, Drive 50LMT and DriveSmart 50LMT are identical in both hardware and features.
