Introduction

Garmin Drive series, with its set of Driver Awareness features, is actually the base models of the entire range of new navigational devices from the company. While most will find that the Drive is very capable device to deliver road map, points of interest, trip-related functions, and updates, Garmin offers the more advanced lineup with the DriveSmart series.

Most features between Drive and DriveSmart are alike, but the latter simply has more to offer. The added feature is smartphone notification function, so it is not just a marginal extra. It complements Garmin’s idea to encourage safe-driving.

Garmin Drive 50LMT

Built on the most basic offering in Drive series, the 50LMT is actually the base model added with lifetime map and traffic updates. It comes with detailed maps of U.S. or U.S. and Canada, depending on model and plenty of on-the-road navigational features.

The screen is 5-inch dual-orientation type, producing 480 x 272 pixels resolution. You can consider this a basic yet modern car GPS device from Garmin equipped with many familiar features.

Biggest feature is certainly the Driver Awareness. Garmin Drive 50LMT is equipped with an alert system that notifies driver about upcoming road conditions or situations. The device produces alerts based on maps for potentially dangerous circumstances for examples sudden sharp curves, railroad crossings, speed limit changes, school zone, animal crossings, speed camera locations, traffic lights, and upcoming traffic jams. Fatigue warning gives alerts during long drives and suggests some rest areas.

In many previous car navigational devices from Garmin, some features such as school zone warning and speed limit changes are available, but Driver Awareness improves them by bringing some more useful alerts. In addition, there is Up Ahead functionality to display POIs along your route including gas stations, rest areas, ATMs, or milestones. You can enable this function to appear on the right side of the screen without leaving the main driving map display.

LMT stands for Lifetime Maps and Traffic, meaning that the device comes with free map updates and traffic information without time limitations, subscription fee, or additional charge. Map updates are available for up to 4 times every year and can be downloaded from Garmin’s official website.

Drive 50LMT is packaged with vehicle power cable that doubles as traffic antenna. Traffic update and information is delivered to the device, requiring no connection with smartphone. Even when driving in poor-signal area, traffic information is still provided.

Spoken navigation no longer uses long street names and numbers on the Drive 50LMT. It uses recognizable landmarks as points of references such as traffic lights, buildings, and popular places. POIs are sourced from Foursquare database, and it gets updated based on real people’s opinions and reviews so the information should be more accurate.

Furthermore, Direct Access feature takes the navigation off the road into more specific area including airport and department store to help you find parking lot, nearest exit to your destination, etc. Other features include trip planner, trip log, lane assist with junction view, and compatibility with optional wireless camera (BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera and babyCam).

Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT

Still in the same Drive series line up, the DriveSmart 50LMT is an iteration of the basic Drive models with one big improvement: smartphone notification. To do that however, Garmin has to add two more technologies including Bluetooth and Voice activated navigation.  It comes with detailed maps of  North America.

To use smart notification feature, you must pair DriveSmart 50LMT with a compatible smartphone. Once paired, you can receive phone calls directly from the device thanks to built-in speaker and microphone. There is no need to take the phone out of your pocket, so your hands are constantly on the steering wheel.

By downloading Smartphone Link free companion app, you can also view notifications such as texts and apps on its 5-inch screen. The app comes with free and paid Garmin Live Services such as fuel prices, weather, dynamic parking, and more. Smartphone Link app is compatible with iOS (7.0 or later) and Android (2.2 or newer) devices.

Built-in microphone is not only for making phone calls, but also for voice-activated navigation. Instead of pressing menu buttons and search, you can communicate with DriveSmart 50LMT simply by speaking out commands and ask for certain address or POIs. It is possible to turn off this feature without disabling the spoken navigation. Apart from those, Drive 50LMT and DriveSmart 50LMT are identical in both hardware and features.

Introduction

Earlier this year, Garmin announced four new series in the company’s lineup of portable car GPS navigators including Drive, DriveSmart, DriveAssist, and DriveLuxe. Garmin Drive has the largest number of devices in the list including but not limited to Drive 50, Drive 50LM, and Drive 50LMT. Garmin Drive is the base series, meaning all other devices from in the new lineup are built-on its features.

Driver Awareness

The biggest thing about Garmin Drive is the Driver Alerts, a feature that makes each navigator able to warn or notify drivers about important navigational information. Such technology is commonly seen as normal functionality is the built-in satellite navigational device of luxury vehicles.

Now that Garmin has made it available in its new devices, everyone can take advantage of it by mounting the aftermarket navigators to their vehicles’ windshields.

Driver Awareness warns drivers about many things on the road before drivers actually encounter them. It notifies about upcoming red lights, railroad crossings, school zones, sharp curves, and speed cameras. More than that, it also recognizes if the vehicle is running in wrong way of a one-way street.

Changes of speed limit on the upcoming roads are informed, too. During long drive, the navigational device suggests driver to take a rest and recommend some places to do that. The good thing is that all those warnings and suggestions are displayed on the top of the screen without disrupting the main driving map.

Map and Traffic Updates

Garmin 50, 50LM and 50LMT are basically the same devices, which only differ in terms of maps and traffic updates. The base model Drive 50 does not come with lifetime map updates from Garmin, but the 50LM does. The higher tier 50LMT comes with both lifetime map and traffic updates. All updates are available free of charge with no subscription.

Map updates are available up to 4 times a year and they can be downloaded to the device by using a computer. Lifetime traffic is a continuous service that delivers the most recent broadcast of traffic information directly to the device. Garmin Drive 50LMT comes with a vehicle power cable that doubles as traffic antenna, so it does not rely on cellular network or connectivity with smartphone of any sort.

Traffic information may include possible delay or detours and it can even confirm if the vehicle is running on the fastest route to the selected destination.

Navigational Features

Apart from those differences, all three devices share the same specifications. Each of them comes pre-loaded with detailed maps of U.S. 48 contiguous states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and several Caribbean Islands.

On selected models, the pre-loaded maps cover both U.S. and Canada. Built-in POIs are sourced from Foursquare and they bring detailed information about every point based on real people’s review. Search function in the Drive series brings the most relevant results from Foursquare.

The screens in all three of these devices also have the same specification. It is a 5-inch color TFT screen that produces 480 x 272 pixels resolution. Users can use either horizontal or vertical orientation as well.

Garmin Drive can deliver spoken navigation direction using recognizable landmarks. Instead of using street names and numbers, the device uses easily identified landmarks as points of reference such as red lights and popular buildings.

Besides Driver Awareness and Foursquare POIs, Garmin Drive has Up Ahead feature to display any upcoming services for examples gas stations, restaurants, ATMs, and more. Details of locations are displayed on the right hand side of the screen, alongside the main driving map. Up Ahead can be disabled and enabled with a tap of the screen.

All the usual navigational features by Garmin are available such as Lane Assist, Junction View, Speed Limit Indicator, and Route Avoidance. Users can also use Trip Planner function to create personalized route and include multiple stops before arriving to the destination. In case there are at least 4 stops in the route, the device can optimize your trip by creating the most efficient route.

Optional Accessories

Garmin Drive 50, 50LM, and 50LMT are compatible with BC 30 Wireless Camera. When the camera is connected to any of the devices, it delivers live video feed from the back of the vehicle as soon as reverse gear is engaged.

The main driving map will switch display automatically to give complete navigational information. An in-vehicle camera, the Garmin babyCam, is compatible as well.
