Introduction
The biggest innovation in the new Garmin Drive series of portable navigators is Drive Awareness feature. Using the preloaded map database and sensors planted on the device, it produces alerts for multiple potentially alarming road conditions such as sharp curves, school zones, railroad crossings, and speed limit changes.
Garmin actually had a glimpse of Driver Awareness in many previous series with some alerts for examples speed cameras and traffic lights, but this feature is now taken more seriously in the new series. There is also fatigue warning to notify driver during long continuous trip and suggest break time. Garmin Drive is available in three different screen sizes including 5-inch, 6-inch, and 7-inch.
The Drive 60LM and 60LMT are essentially twins but with slight difference in terms of traffic updates. The abbreviations LM and LMT attached to devices’ names indicate the availability of lifetime map and traffic update. Garmin has been using such identification in all its portable car navigators, making it easy for consumers to choose the device they need..
Both Drive navigators have the same physical specifications, but the 60LMT is packaged with a vehicle power cable that doubles as traffic antenna. Another good thing is that Garmin sends traffic update information directly to the navigator without relying on existing data plan on drivers’ phones.
Traffic update informs driver about any possible detour or delay and confirm whether the current route is the fastest to reach destination. Apart from this feature, Drive 60LM and 60LMT are exactly the same devices.
Garmin Drive 60LM/Drive 60LMT
Physical dimension measures at 6.7-inch H x 3.7-inch W x 0.8-inch D. The screen is 6-inch and it produces 800 x 480 pixels resolution. Dual-orientation display is nice addition to give a smartphone-like experience with the navigator. The package includes Garmin Drive device, vehicle suction cup, USB cable, instruction manual, and vehicle power cable for the 60LM or vehicle power cable/traffic antenna for 60LMT.
Each is preloaded with maps of U.S. including 48 contiguous states, Hawaii, Caribbean Islands, and Puerto Rico. Millions of POIs as well as Foursquare database are on-board with the option to add custom POIs or favorite destinations. Map updates are provided as free service up to 4 times every rear.
Updates are available from Garmin’s official website with no additional cost or subscription fee of any sort. Updated maps may bring new POIs and detailed information sourced from Foursquare service.
To complement the aforementioned Driver Awareness, Garmin provides Up Ahead functionality which displays any upcoming service such as gas stations, ATMs, restaurants, and more. The 6-inch screen can display both main driving map and Up Ahead services at the same time, meaning you are well-informed about your route but you still get updates about popular POIs along your trip.
Garmin Drive 60 comes with Real Direction technology to use easily identifiable landmarks as points of references for navigation. Rather than using street names for spoken turn-by-turn direction, the device makes use of recognizable buildings and traffic lights to deliver the information. With the addition of Foursquare database, there are going to be more popular landmarks over time.
Direct Access is included as well. This feature takes the navigation beyond the border of streets and addresses. It gives directions even inside large buildings such as airports or department store to help you find specific places.
You can navigate inside a shopping center or to the nearest parking spot and get relevant information about your actual destination. All usual popular Garmin’s features are still present for examples route avoidance, lane assist with junction view, and trip planner.
The entire Garmin Drive lineup supports optional accessories. The series is compatible with BC 30 wireless backup camera and babyCam. BC 30 is mounted on the back of your vehicle and connected to the navigator. Every time you engage the reverse gear, the camera feeds real-time video to the screen to give clear sight of any obstacle behind you.
Garmin’s babyCam is quite similar, but it is installed inside the vehicle and you can display its feed on-demand. This camera is the first in-vehicle baby monitor to give you peace of mind when traveling with your child. It can be mounted on the back of driver seat or any location that gives best viewing angle. The real missing feature is Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling. It is actually available in many other offerings from Garmin, but this time it is omitted.
