Dash Cam

Garmin provided a dash cam as built-in feature of the DriveAssist 50LMT. The camera features including loop recording, wide-angle lens, and of course, GPS stamp to mark time and location of any road incident recorded or captured. The lens also has swivel design to allow for viewing adjustment.

The dash cam planted in DriveAssist 50LMT brings accident detection G-sensor to recognize any sudden braking or sharp turn; when anything that potentially resembles incident-related circumstances, the camera saves the last recorded footage so it does not get overwritten in its loop-recording. A microSD is even included in the package.

You can play the video footage or view captured images directly on the navigator’s screen or on your computer using Garmin Dash Cam player. However, it does not have sound recording. This accessory is designed in such a way that you can remove it easily from the main unit, useful when you need to take a snapshot of incident evidence such as broken headlight, dent hood, or fallen-off mirrors, etc.

Thanks to the built-in camera, DriveAssist 50LMT provides warning based on both driving map and real-time road conditions. There are at least 4 important driving assistance features from the camera including:

  • Forward Collision Warning: on-screen and audible alerts anytime your car is too close to vehicle ahead.
  • Lane Departure Warning: when swift to illegal lane at 40mph or more, the navigator triggers an alert.
  • Go Alert: a notification to tell you that red light turns to green.
  • Real Vision: the device switches from map view to real view of the road when you’re reaching a destination.

Screen and Updates

DriveAssist 50LMT is not the biggest navigator indeed, but the 5-inch screen provides enough room to see every direction and notification clearly. The screen supports pinch-and-zoom operation, and a single tap opens Up Ahead display to see any upcoming POI along your route such as ATMs, rest area, gas stations, and more.

Maps of United States and Canada along with several Caribbean Islands and most of Mexico are preloaded (North America Maps). Millions of POIs are available on-board as well. With every purchase of DriveAssist 50LMT, Garmin gives free lifetime map updates available for up to 4 times a year. Garmin Traffic updates come free of charge, too. All traffic information is sent directly to the navigator without requiring network coverage. Updates may include possible delays, detours, and confirmation whether or not you are driving on the fastest route.

Smartphone Notifications

When connected to a compatible smartphone, DriveAssist 50LMT can bridge communication over phones. Because it has microphone and speakers, you can have hands-free conversation so your hands stay on the steering wheel and your eyes remain on the road all the time.

Bluetooth connectivity with phone allows the navigator to display smartphone notification on the 5-inch screen too. Texts, emails, calendar reminder, and incoming phone calls are displayed on the navigator’s screen. In addition, you can control the device by using spoken commands, so you can use the navigator even without touching it.

Driver Awareness

Apart from camera-based alert system, DriveAssist 50LMT is equipped with Driver Awareness feature to give you important heads-up about upcoming road conditions based on information provided in the map. Some of the most useful alerts are for sharp curves, school zone, railroad crossings, speed camera locations, changes in speed limit, and upcoming traffic congestion.

To make it even more complete, DriveAssist 50LMT is compatible with BC 30 wireless backup camera and Garmin babyCam (both are available from Garmin). A backup camera automatically feeds footage to the navigator’s screen anytime you engage in Reverse gear, allowing you to see all obstacles behind the car. Garmin babyCam is the first in-vehicle baby camera that feeds real-time footage of the backseat to the navigator’s display.

Introduction

Garmin Drive series of portable car GPS devices is known for its Driver Awareness features to detect any upcoming driving-related situations which may affect the safety of drivers, and produce alerts as initial warning or suggestions.

In addition to the original Drive, Garmin has made several iterations including the DriveSmart 50LMT and DriveAssist 50LMT. Each has the signature Driver Awareness function with some extra features that set these two sub-series apart.

Garmin DriveSmart 50LMT

DriveSmart currently has 3 devices listed under its name, and the 50LMT is the smallest option with its 5-inch screen. Unlike a smartphone that relies on cellular network and data connection to support location tracking and display real-time driving map, this portable car GPS can work without any cellular signal at all.

Some features do require Internet connection or Bluetooth connectivity with smartphone, but its main function as an electronic navigator is, in essence, similar to that of any GPS receiver and transmitter.

The DriveSmart 50LMT comes preloaded with maps of not only U.S. and Canada, but also Mexico and Caribbean Islands. Millions of POIs are on-board as well to help you skip the typical menu-scrolling search process. You can even add custom POIs filled with home address or favorite destinations.

As usual, Garmin provides lifetime maps and traffic updates at no additional cost. Maps can be downloaded up to four times every year from Garmin website. Traffic update is delivered directly to the portable devices with no cellular data connection required.

The main purpose of Driver Awareness feature is to encourage safer driving habits by improving driver’s understanding of the surrounding situation and any upcoming changes. DriveSmart 50LMT produces alerts for many different situations such as sharp curves ahead, school zone, railroad crossing, and changes in speed limit.

It even gives fatigue warning during long restless driving and suggests some places to take a break. There are also alerts for speed cameras and red lights as well as notifications for driving the wrong way on one-way street.

Compared to the original Drive series, DriveSmart 50LMT offers a more sophisticated feature: Smart Notifications. Harnessing the power of Bluetooth technology, the portable navigator can connect to a compatible smartphone (Android, Apple, or Windows 10) and display notifications on its screen. This feature requires you to download and install Garmin’s Smartphone Link app on the phone.

Without the app, Bluetooth connectivity is still useful for making hands-free phone calls. Smartphone Link supports real-time information streaming about weather and traffic conditions. When paired, DriveSmart 50LMT uses the phone’s existing data plan to download the information. More than that, you can use the app to share current locations and destinations.

Its 5-inch touchscreen supports pinch and zoom. You also get Up Ahead display which brings up any upcoming services along your route on the right hand side of the screen. Main driving map and Up Ahead services can appear at the same time on the screen too.

DriveSmart 50LMT is equipped with voice-activated navigation, allowing you to input command using only your voice. You can ask for a destination or enter addresses without even touching the screen. The portable navigator can talk back to you about driving directions.

Instead of using street names like the old-generation devices did, DriveSmart uses recognizable landmarks as points of references for examples traffic light and large buildings. Because it is supported by Foursquare, many new places in the POI list will be often updated.

DriveAssist 50LMT

In many respects, DriveSmart 50LMT and DriveAssist 50LMT are identical but the latter is the more advanced offering from Garmin. One thing that sets them apart is the addition of dash cam in the DriveAssist. Garmin actually offers this device as stand-alone optional purchase, but this time the camera is integrated with the navigator.

DriveAssist 50LMT has all the features that you can find in the DriveSmart 50LMT, but the dash cam adds some extras including continuous video footage with automatic file saving following an impact. The camera has an Incident Detection sensor to trigger the automatic saving sequence to microSD. You can playback the video on the device or on computer by using Garmin’s Dash Cam Player for more detailed analysis.

Both navigators are compatible with the optional BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera. When installed, the camera feed real-time video footage from the back of the car as you engage the reverse gear. Garmin also offers babyCam, the first in-vehicle video baby monitor that feeds display to your navigator.

Introduction

In the January 2016 Consumer Electronic Show, Garmin made the official introduction of its new portable car GPS product line named Drive series. There are four categories listed under the series including Garmin Drive, DriveSmart, DriveAssist, and DriveLuxe.

All devices in the series feature enhanced awareness features typically only available in luxury cars. Garmin DriveAssist 50LMT builds on the DriveSmart featuring all the driver awareness alerts available added with built-in dashcam.

The top of the range is DriveLuxe, which features better hardware specification with forged metal design and HD Digital Traffic.

Garmin DriveAssist 50LMT

Garmin DriveAssist 50LMTAll new devices in the Drive series are noticeably different from each other in terms of screen size. Garmin DriveAssist 50LMT is one of the least generous with 5-inch display that produces 480 x 272 pixels resolution.

It comes with built-in maps of North America and free lifetime map updates. Although this is not the top range device in the series, it is stuffed with helpful features including the awareness alerts and traffic information.

The highlight of DriveAssist 50LMT is its built-in dashcam capable of recording videos along your trip and capturing geo-tagged still images. No other device in the new series has this additional hardware.

Many features of the built-in camera are similar to those of a stand-alone one for examples Incident Detection by using G-sensor and direct video playback on board. Videos and images can also be played on Garmin’s Dash Cam player where you can see more detailed information about your location on map.

Driver Awareness feature works by giving alerts for certain driving conditions that potentially lead to alarming situations. DriveAssist 50LMT provides alerts when you are driving in the wrong direction on one-way street or when approaching red lights and speed cameras. You also get alerts anytime there is a school zone nearby and sudden halt in traffic.

Common driving difficulties are also covered for examples railroad crossings, speed changes, sharp curves, and animal crossings. When you’ve been driving for many hours without resting, the device even gives you fatigue warning.

Because Up Ahead functionality is included as well, it is easy to see if there is any place for you to park and rest without leaving the main driving map view.

“Go Alert”  Features

Utilizing its built-in camera, Drive Assist 50LMT brings several useful additions to the default Drive Awareness features. It has a “Go Alert” which automatically kicks-in at red light when the vehicle in front of you has started to move.

Forward Collision Warning &  Lane Departure Warning

The dashcam is able to give Forward Collision Warning when you are driving too close to the vehicle ahead. Also, when you are drifting into incoming traffic or to the wrong lane, its Lane Departure Warning activates.

Apart from those, the dashcam switches the main driving map view into real-time video recording feed when you are approaching your destination. A clear bright arrow indicates any selected address.

Voice Commands

All navigational features available in the DriveAssist 50LMT can be activated with voice commands, allowing you to keep your hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road.

HandsFree Calling & Notifications

When the device is paired with a compatible smartphone via Bluetooth, the navigator allows you to make hands-free calling, and receive notifications directly on its screen. Notifications are user-adjustable, meaning you can configure which ones to show and hide. If detailed weather and traffic information are desired, you can download and install Smartphone Link mobile app on your smartphone and pair it with the GPS navigator.

Traffic Avoidance

Even without the mobile app, Drive Assist 50LMT has its own Traffic Avoidance and situational update sent directly to the navigator. This feature is provided free of charge for lifetime. Information may include possible delays, route choices, and detours.

Garmin DriveLuxe 50LMTHD

Garmin DriveLuxe 50LMTHDAlthough equipped with the same screen size as the Garmin DriveAssist 50LMT, the 5-inch screen on the Garmin DriveLuxe 50LMTHD produces better resolution at 800 x 480 pixels resolution. DriveLuxe is the top range category in the new series, but it has both improvement and decline in terms of features.

Besides providing more pixels resolution, DriveLuxe gives a metal body and better traffic update information. Instead of using the typical traffic update seen in many Garmin’s car navigators, it brings HD Digital Traffic to cover greater area and more frequent updates every 30 seconds. You can even activate the function by using spoken commands. HD Digital Traffic is free service without subscription or any additional fee.

Garmin DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, however, does not have built-in dashcam, so the Driver Awareness features are not assisted by any camera of any sort.
