TomTom GO 500
TomTom GO 500 comes with maps covering the U.S., Canada, and Mexico delivered through a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen that produces 480 x 272 pixels resolution. For major metropolitan areas, GO 500 displays 3D maps with animated landmarks in your route as well as comprehensive lane diagrams in complex intersections.
TomTom also updates the location of red-light cameras. The overall device dimension measures at 5.7-inch W x 3.6-inch H x 0.8-inch D, and it weighs 8.3 oz. Package includes GO 500 main console, mounting devices, adhesive mount, USB power cable, and instruction manual.
One of the highlights is the way GO 500 integrates with smartphones. In many portable navigation systems, the most common problem is not the difficulty in finding the exact location of destination, but finding the fastest or most efficient route to get there.
TomTom is actually one of the first companies to introduce the use of live traffic information to solve this problem in portable navigational device. Instead of relying on any subscription-based services or cellular data network, GO 500 connects to smartphone using Bluetooth and receives live traffic information including position and speed. Information is gathered not from any particular third-party service, but from fellow drivers who use TomTom devices.
During first setup, TomTom recommends connecting GO 500 to a computer to confirm whether your navigator is up to date through the MyDrive online system. Once confirmed, you can download the MyDrive companion smartphone app (compatible with Android and iOS devices) to make use of live traffic information.
With the app, you can check the current traffic speed on nearby roads, aggregated from other TomTom users. Red colored mark indicates slow speed (or potentially congested traffic), while orange means good.
Its 5-inch touchscreen acts like a screen of a smartphone with which you can tap, swipe, or pinch & zoom. Since the companion app plays major role in how the navigation works, interactive screen is a welcomed feature. In addition to live traffic updates by Bluetooth connection, TomTom GO 500 also gives free map updates for lifetime.
Every year, the company will make at least 4 map updates available, and you can download them through computer before moving the file to the navigational device. Red-light camera locations update can be downloaded separately for up to 3 months without additional cost.
The most redesigned part of the device is menu system where you no longer find text-based buttons and menu pop-up by pressing the map. Compared to previous TomTom generations, menu system in the GO 500 is very much different. There is a search option that brings two-paned results including addresses on the left and POIs on the right.
Based on your keywords, results from other countries are also displayed, and everything appears as you type. Furthermore, there is My Place option to find Home destination, recent destination, and favorite destination. Other menu entries include Petrol Stations and Parking. Menu buttons are not densely located in one particular spot on the screen, but this allows you to see the main map more completely without clutters.
TomTom GO 600
The iteration of GO 500 is the GO 600, possessing the same maps, updated menu system, live traffic from Bluetooth-connected smartphone, and free map updates for lifetime. The only thing that separates those two devices is that the screen on the GO 600 is larger at 6-inch that produces better pixel density as well with the resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.
Of course, bigger screen means that the device has larger dimension. Apart from those differences, they are identical twins from the body design to the features and technologies inside.
