Garmin eTrex series is filled with handheld GPS-enabled devices primarily designed for hiking or geocaching activities, although some of them are multipurpose and usable for other outdoor sports.
Garmin eTrex 20x and eTrex 30x are both basically the same devices compared to their predecessors (eTrex 20 and 30). Design, interface, and software remain more or less the same, but the upgraded versions have better screen specification.
The previous and upgraded versions have the same 2.2-inch screen, but the latter devices now bring 240 x 320 pixels resolution. Another important upgrade is the internal memory capacity from the previous 1.7GB to 3.7GB for storing more mapping data. They are compatible with BlueChart g2, BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, and TOPO 24k.
Garmin eTrex 20x
Mainly designed for geocaches data management including storing, editing, and sharing it, the eTrex 20x also supports other outdoor activities such as cycling and fishing thanks to its compatibility with more maps for marine-based and even road navigation.
The main benefit from this device is paperless geocaching because such data is now available and accessible in digital format. All essential information stored in geocaches including terrain, location, difficulty, descriptions, and hints can be downloaded and viewed directly on the device.
It is no longer necessary to write down information and coordinates on paper. Garmin eTrex 20x supports GPX file which can be easily downloaded and stored in the device’s memory.
There is even an option to filter caches based on terrain, size, difficulty, etc. Every GPX file can be downloaded from Geocaching.com website.
Garmin eTrex 20x is one of few consumer-grade receivers to support both GPS and GLONASS satellite networks; both can work at the same time.
For hikers who often find themselves in challenging terrain that it gets difficult to acquire GPS-based location acquisition, GLONASS adds 24 more satellites to make sure a faster lock-on and better coverage in more areas than using GPS network only.
HotFix satellite prediction and a WAAS-enabled receiver also help to lock on position and maintain connectivity in a heavily covered area. On average, GPS and GLONASS acquire position 20 percent faster compared to GPS-only.
Garmin eTrex 20x also allows you to manage three geocache data including waypoints, tracks, and routes. When handling waypoints, you can configure their average locations and even reposition a waypoint from wherever you are.
For tracks, it is possible to view an elevation plot and show multiple tracks on the map. You can assign a custom color to every visible track, including the active one, for better readability.
Editing and reversing a route is also easy on this device. The compatible additional maps include BlueChart g2 and City Navigator NT so the eTrex 20x will deliver road navigation as if it is a car GPS. BirdsEye Satellite Imagery is also supported, but it requires subscription to download and integrate with the existing maps on the device.
Garmin eTrex 30x
All features found in the eTrex 20x are available on the eTrex 30x. Everything else is the same including the device physical dimension, screen size, screen resolution, compatibility with additional maps, and memory capacity.
There are, however, three things exclusive to the eTrex 30x including 3-axis electronic compass, barometric altimeter, and the feature to share geocache information wirelessly to other compatible devices such as VIRB action camera and accessory sensors.
