Heart Rate Monitoring

Garmin Forerunner 235The Garmin Forerunner 235 is the first running watch product from Garmin to track heart rate using Garmin’s Elevate wrist heart rate technology. This means users can wear only the 235 watch without having to wear a separate chest strap to keep track of their heart rate.

The Elevate heart rate technology reports a user’s heart rate zone and beats per minute in real time. For runners who have been reticent to engage in heart rate tracking because of the added chest band other running watches require, the Forerunner 235 offers freedom from that extra accessory and the discomfort it can cause some runners.

While the Forerunner 230 does not use Elevate wrist technology, it does sync with a heart rate chest strap. Garmin offers customers the option to purchase the Forerunner 230 on its own or with a chest strap.

Garmin Forerunner 230 Through their respective heart rate monitors, the Garmin Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 also provide users with VO2 max estimates. With their heart rate information, users also can take advantage of the Forerunner 230’s and Forerunner 235’s capacity to predict their race times and even set a recovery timer. This recovery timer recommends how long users should rest before they head out for another difficult run.

Both the Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 feature the same easy to read, multicolored graphic interface that shows heart rate and the user’s heart rate zone, as well as duration, pace and other data, at a glance. Likewise, the screen on each watch is designed especially to be read in bright sunlight, so runners can check their pace and statistics in any climate, at any time of day.

Daily Tracking for Overall Health, Even Indoors

The Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 come equipped with a built in accelerometer that logs data seamlessly indoors from the watch itself. So, users who work out on an indoor track or a treadmill do not need to use an accessory such as a foot pod to capture their workouts with accuracy.

Unlike older running watches, the Garmin Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 can be worn full time as daily tracking devices, not just training tools. As such, the watches act as activity trackers for everyday movement.

Both the Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 count a user’s daily steps, distance covered and calories burned as the user goes through the day. The watches even remind the user to get up and move if the user sits still for more than an hour at a time during the day, and they track the user’s sleeping patterns as well.

While outside, users can expect pinpoint location from the Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235, because both models are built to work with GPS and GLONASS satellites. Thanks to this extensive geolocation coverage, the watches can locate a user and track the user’s progress with high accuracy and speed anywhere in the world, even when the user is exercising near tall buildings or in extremely isolated environments.

Compatibiity and Customization

Through Garmin Connect, a proprietary application from Garmin that works both through browers and mobile apps, users can download training plans and workouts to their Forerunner 230 or 235, as well as set up notifications, weather condition information and forecasts on the watch.

Also through Garmin Connect, users can access succinct, easy to follow graphs, maps, charts and other tools to help them see their activities, follow their progress toward their goals and send data to others in the network. This sharing feature makes challenges and competitions easy to complete, and the LiveTrack feature lets competitors see where they stand in real time.

The Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 automatically upload user data to Garmin Connect. So, users do not have to plug their Forerunner 230 or Forerunner 235 into a computer to download their training or activity data.

Users who track their health using MyFitness Pal can sync their Garmin Forerunner 230 or Forerunner 235 to their MyFitness Pal account. Because of this connectivity, MyFitness Pal users can track active and consumed calories as well as their remaining calories, all without entering extra data on the MyFitness Pal platform.

Both the Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 use Connect IQ to allow users to customize their experience with their watch. Users can download the data fields they want to see, as well as different watch faces, widgets and applications.

The Forerunner 230 and 235 are compatible with Android and iOS enabled smartphones. (For now, Garmin’s technology does not work with Windows phones, Kindle phones or other such operating systems.) Through a smartphone, a user can receive smart notifications for text, email and call alerts, as well as music controls and audio alerts for lap and lap times during a workout.

Battery Life, Water Resistance and Other Specifications

The Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 both use a rechargeable, lithium ion battery. As expected, buyers receive a charging and data cradle for charging the watch as part of their purchase of either running watch.

The Garmin Forerunner 230 has an extended battery life compared to its counterparts. It can produce up to 16 hours of battery life in training mode, and it can operate up to five weeks in watch mode while still providing activity tracking and smart notifications.

On the other hand, the Forerunner 235 needs to be charged more often than does the Forerunner 230. The Forerunner 235 can produce up to 11 hours of battery life in training mode. While in watch mode, it can provide activity tracking and smart notifications and still last up to nine days.

Both the Forerunner 230 and Forerunner 235 are water resistant up to 50 meters with a water rating of 5 ATM. They are lightweight at just 1.5 ounces (42 grams) and have a round, 1.23 inch color display. This display is 44 percent larger than previous ones, so users can see their training progress at a glance while working out.
