It is Garmin’s first car GPS that comes bundled with BC 20 wireless backup camera. This wide-angle camera is waterproof and ruggedized, so it is safe to say that this equipment is expected to survive difficult weather conditions.
BC 20 should be mounted at the rear at the vehicle and connected with the reverse lights.
As the driver shifts to reverse, the camera automatically starts and displays the area behind the car on nuvi 2798LMT’s screen. According to the manufacturer, BC 20 can cover area as far as 45 ft away.
When the camera is activated, the screen automatically connects to it; when driver shifts out of reverse, the navigation will resume as usual.
Another good feature is the voice-activated Garmin Traffic. It keeps the driving map on the main screen while it displays traffic information and alerts on the side of the map. All messages are spoken and it can provide information whether there is any possible detour or how long a delay is.
Furthermore, Garmin Traffic also informs you about the fastest route available for your destination. LMT (Lifetime Map and Traffic) is included, meaning you will receive map updates and traffic information free of charge for lifetime.
A free mobile app called Smartphone Link is compatible with nuvi 2798LMT. The app makes it possible to connect the main unit with iPhone or Android smartphone. When the main unit is connected with a compatible smartphone, it is possible to use the phone’s existing data plan to share information including POIs and destination.
Moreover, Smartphone Link also provides access to Garmin Live Service where information such as traffic and weather conditions is available for free. In addition, drivers can also connect the nuvi 2798LMT with their smartphones by using Bluetooth connectivity.
When connected, drivers can receive and make phone calls via the GPS device. The conversation will go through Garmin nuvi 2798LMT’s built-in microphone and speaker.
Garmin Real Directions and Active Lane Guidance
There are two important technologies equipped in nuvi 2798LMT including Garmin Real Directions and Active Lane Guidance. Garmin Real Directions feature spoken driving guidance which now also speaks out recognizable landmarks and traffic lights instead of distance only before making any turn.
Active Lane Guidance displays comprehensive animations that inform driver to take the proper lane required for any given route. The animation appears as the vehicle approaches an interchange or exit. This technology uses voice prompts as well to give better navigation assistance.
