Garmin nuvi 65LM
Garmin nuvi 65LM was launched in January 2014 as part of the Essential series. One of the biggest selling point is that it brought premium features and interface which were previously only available in the higher tier Advanced series.
Maps Lower 49 States
It comes preloaded with detailed maps lower 49 states and free lifetime map updates. In the days when people start to abandon stand-along portable car GPS navigator for smartphone, Garmin makes a point that the 65LM does not rely on by cellular signals and it is unaffected by cellular dead zone.
Updated maps can be downloaded up to 4 times a year. You can connect the device to a computer via USB to download the new map from Garmin Express. It is compatible with Windows Vista or higher and Mac OS X Lion or newer.
Every new map may include new POIs and other navigation information, meaning the size can be bigger than the previous one. Garmin nuvi 65LM accept data cards to store data of not only updated map but also custom voice and vehicles downloaded from Garmin Garage.
It comes with 6-inch dual-orientation screen that produces 800 x 480 pixels resolution. The nuvi 65LM is also Garmin’s first navigator to come with a screen of this size, and the dual orientation allows user to view the driving map vertically which is more in line with typical smartphone display. Garmin 65LM measures at 3.7-inch H x 6.6-inch W x 0.8-inch D, and it weighs 8.6 oz.
The screen has a search bar for you to find any address and POIs available in the preloaded map. Instead of using the traditional method of location searching by post code, street, and house number, the search bar on 65LM was found to be a more acceptable approach; when it was launched, people were starting to get used to search function of smartphone.
This feature prevents you from having to enter full address of a location, but the function is still available when necessary. Despite the new search field, traditional icons remain exist, and the POIs are listed under some major categories such as restaurants, shopping, and gas stations. Categories are user-adjustable as well. When approaching school-zone, the voice provides both visual and audio alerts to warn you.
Main map view shows the map in either 2D or 3D-based view, and continues updating your location along the route. Every next turning is indicated by a big arrow and detailed road name of the running on the top bar of the screen.
Many icons are spread around the map display indicating your current street, current speed, speed limit on that street, and estimated arrival time to your destination or to the next waypoint.
Another interesting feature is spoken navigation; the device speaks out road number and street name as well as proximity of the next turning. The voice conveys basic messages, but they are enough to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel.
Up Ahead feature constantly updates upcoming POIs along your route. It is accessible from the main driving up and it will appear on the right hand side. Locations of nearby businesses are provided such as gas stations, foods, parking, banks, restrooms, and ATMs.
Each is shown as an icon with brand logos and distance from your current location. You can immediately navigate to each location, too.
Lane Assist with Junction View
Lane Assist with Junction View displays upcoming complex intersection and clear arrow to indicate your current position as well as the proper lane to take. Both are displayed side by side, but without removing indicator icons on the display.
Garmin nuvi 65LM also has Trip Planner with which you can configure your next route to avoid tolls, highways, or plan multiple stops before arriving to the actual destinations. There is an optional ecoRoute feature to calculate fuel economy and create the most efficient route.
Garmin nuvi 65LMT
The nuvi 65LM has an identical twin, the nuvi 65LMT. They are very similar in terms of hardware and features. The only difference between them is that 65LMT offer Lifetime Traffic updates.
Both devices do not have to rely on cellular signals, and the addition of traffic updates makes this even better. The vehicle power cable that comes with 65LMT doubles as lifetime traffic antenna. Updated traffic information may include possible detours and delays on your route. Information is sent directly to the navigator without requiring cellular data and subscription fee.
Wireless Backup Camera Compatibility
Additionally, both devices are compatible with BC 30 wireless backup camera and babyCam wireless backseat camera.
